Is a weekend trip to Edinburgh sensible?

BillieJean273 · 17/11/2024 11:12

I'm posting here because I've always telling myself I want to go back to Edinburgh. I went a few summers ago and loved it, but instead of waiting till 2025.

Is it sensible just to book a trip for next weekend? I'm from London so the train journey isn't too far.

Why would it not be sensible?

Pistachiochiochio · 17/11/2024 11:14

What's stopping you?

You know it will be quite different in the winter, right?

Ratisshortforratthew · 17/11/2024 11:14

just go! What are you waiting for? Why wouldn’t it be sensible?

The Christmas market started this weekend so that will be worth a look around, but expect it to be very busy, and we're also expecting a cold snap this week so bring plenty of warm layers.

It's incredibly easy to get from London to Edinburgh by train! However, definitely keep an eye on the weather forecast at this time of year. I think snow is forecast next weekend.

snowlady4 · 17/11/2024 11:17

Edinburgh at Christmas time- beautiful. Obviously it will be cold and busy but still lovely! Not really sure what you're asking about it being sensible? Depends on your budget maybe? Or if there's something you want to do there that might not be suitable in the Winter months?

BillieJean273 · 17/11/2024 11:19

Sensible - if I book for the very next weekend are the accommodation prices going to be extremely high?

Should I have booked at least a month in advance?

Have a look online & see what accommodation prices & travel costs look like. Sometimes it's n8ce just to be spontaneous!

levantine · 17/11/2024 11:28

Go! I can't imagine that accommodation will be super expensive right now? Take warm clothes though

LIZS · 17/11/2024 11:35

We went this time last year. Accommodation not cheap (there are also uni graduations coming up) but frankly it never is. Not particularly chilly but be prepared for damp and windy. The Xmas market is ok but less hectic in the New Town section by the ice rink. Book the castle in advance if you plan to visit it.

redannie18 · 17/11/2024 11:35

Just do it :)

Hotel prices are high at all times now unfortunately but you might find something. Worth considering flying, BA to/from london city is often cheaper than train (trains can be unreliable on sundays).

If you can afford it does it matter? I impulse-booked a trip to Tokyo last month. Edinburgh is nothing!

ApolloandDaphne · 17/11/2024 12:12

My DH has just booked an apartment for £90 for a night. There are definitely deals to be had at the moment. He uses Destiny Scotland.

BashfulClam · 17/11/2024 12:21

there are sadly less deals on accommodation than a few years ago. We used to stay in decent hotels for £100 a night. We live an hour away but liked to go and stay, I realised I was in love with my DH on the royal Mile a few months after we started dating . I remember just looking at him and realising ‘oh…’

the last time we stayed it was the Premier Inn at Edinburgh park. It had both a tram and train station across the road.

herecomesautumn · 17/11/2024 12:25

Sensible? No. The rugby's on and you'll be unable to get into a pub

birdiesings · 17/11/2024 13:42

Edinburgh is always expensive.

BIWI · 17/11/2024 13:43

Why does any weekend trip have to be sensible?!

BillieJean273 · 17/11/2024 14:19

I was thinking about staying in an Airbnb.

Look at the hotels that are on the tram line (say near the airport or indeed in Leith) which are lower cost.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 17/11/2024 14:30

So many amazing restaurants in Edinburgh now, but you’ll struggle to get a weekend booking at the most popular spots a week in advance. If you’re happy to go with the flow, do it!

Ginkypig · 17/11/2024 14:33

Just look up train and accommodation and if you can find both that feels for your budget and that leaves you money to spend while you are there then go for it!

yes possibly you may have found a cheaper deal (but maybe not) if you had more time on your hands but it doesn’t actually matter as long as you feel it’s affordable for your budget.

enjoy your weekend.
