Has anyone been to Stonehenge on the equinox?

Me and DH are thinking of doing it this year but I’m not sure if it’s just going to be lots of people taking selfies for instagram or it’ll be a more spiritual experience. Avebury is another option. Also what time to get there and will traffic be horrendous. TY

I haven’t been for the equinox but have been for the summer solstice.

The stones are awe inspiring, genuinely. I am not spiritual in the slightest though, and so I can’t comment on that front. There was a mix of people, full on Druids, kids, teens getting high, adults also getting high. It was a bit of a party atmosphere if I’m honest and it was heaving.

I think had I gone for a spiritual experience to take in the enormity of it all I would have been disappointed.

I went for the experience of seeing this historic place, with friends, and to marvel at the wonder of it all and enjoyed it for the experience it was.

It's fantastic. The range of people there is huge, yes selfies but last time I went there were choirs, druids galore, witches, families, old and young. Was a wonderful coming together of humanitiy

I inadvertently went to Glastonbury tor on the Autumn equinox as I didn’t realise and it was heaving and not very Pleasant, not my sort of thing. When I’ve known it was an equinox usually summer or winter I usually go for a sunrise swim.

if I was to do Stonehenge I would go one of the week days around it early morning rather than the day itself to avoid crowds

I’m guessing from the timing of this thread you might mean the winter solstice? Unless you mean the spring equinox in March?

Excuse my ignorance but what is the significance of going to Stonehenge at the equinox ?

I went with DC last year. It was great but absolutely packed! DC both wanted to touch the stones and we had to properly squeeze between crowds of people to even get close.

Once the sun was up though, everyone spread out a bit and it was a really nice atmosphere.

We nearly missed it though because traffic into the car park was so bad. Get there early.

If you fancy a party with great costumes and some true pagans then opt for Stonehenge or Avebury, if you're looking for the chance to commune with the stones and the spirit of the year, you could look for one of the quieter circles or a different type of sacred site dotted about the south west. I'm now old and crotchety so mostly just celebrate the turnings of the wheel at home in warmth and comfort with the cats 😊

I have joined in various events at Stonehenge, Avebury and Glastonbury amongst others when I was younger and fitter though and the energy is something to experience.

Thank you and yes I mean solstice, not equinox
