Anyone noticed that people have a tendency these days to answer a question by holding their phone up mutely rather than answering a question. An obvious example is do you have the time? It's starting to really annoy me. I admit I'm particularly sensitive to it as my eye sight has deteriorated and I need to squint, if there is a strong back light it's instant headache. If this happens i say I'm sorry I'd need my glasses, would you mind reading it please.

Since becoming aware of this I've noticed more and more. I recently spent a weekend with a friend and it happened constantly, possibly because I was in her town so was likely to ask questions. Examples - are the buses frequent? She holds up a timetable; is the restaurant far? Google maps screen held up. Dh recently did it when I asked him what time was the restaurant booking.

It's sometimes not even in response to a question, just in normal conversation. My colleague recently told me about a book she finished and that she thought I would like and then holds up a picture of the book instead of just telling me the name and author. I commented one day to a friend 'this bloody rain, I feel like its never going to stop' and she held up a weather tracking screen.

I feel i can't be the only one to have noticed this trend and find it irritating.

This has never happened to me even once.

saveforthat · 16/11/2024 14:57

I don't know anyone who does this, thank goodness.

Itwasnttrue · 16/11/2024 14:59

No I don't think I have never experienced this.

Merrymess · 16/11/2024 14:59

Never noticed this. The phrase 'use your words' irritates me though.

EmpressaurusKitty · 16/11/2024 14:59

I don’t think that’s ever happened to me either.

I need to take my glasses off to look at my phone nowadays so it wouldn’t be straightforward if somebody did try it.

MorettiForMargo · 16/11/2024 15:00

I've not encountered this personally but can see how it would be annoying. Very odd behaviour.

username358 · 16/11/2024 15:00

No, never happened to me.

ObtuseMoose · 16/11/2024 15:01

Onlyvisiting · 16/11/2024 15:02

Doesn't happen to me.

Simonjt · 16/11/2024 15:03

I have never experienced this or heard of it being a thing

ATastingMenuButItsAllCrisps · 16/11/2024 15:25

I don't think this is a trend.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/11/2024 15:44

I'm actually glad to hear this! Maybe its just a few people I know and not some trend that is the final nail in the coffin of social skills

In the old days people used to show you their watch if you asked what time it was Grin

I've been known to do it myself when caught in speechless indecision between 'it's 11.42' and 'it's nearly a quarter to twelve'. I didn't think people asked the time anymore since most have phones or some kind of watch.

NewName24 · 16/11/2024 23:37

Another who can't remember this ever having happened to me.
