Planning on hiring a skip - your top tips

We are considering moving house next year and in preparation I want to hire a skip for all the accumulated crap that is not going to come with us. If you have done something similar, what are your top tips?
Do I go through cupboards now and start a pile of "stuff for the skip" or do I do that when the skip is on the drive?
(Note: I do try and use Gumtree to get rid of stuff but not everything sells and TBH I CBA with taking photos and posting listings of all my crap).

Most skip hires are for a week, so as long as you’re confident you could fill it within that time you’ll be fine.

anything big try and break into smaller pieces if possible. Anything flat put along the sides. Try to not let there be large gaps or holes as you’re not then getting the maximum value from it. Also make sure you fill from the middle to the edges.

read what you can and can’t put in it as some things aren’t allowed.

Did you sort through your cupboard first or once the skip was on the drive? I have some old units that came out of the shed that are definitely going in but what about other things that have been at the back of the attic for 10 years?

We had the skip solely for the kitchen for 2 weeks - it took the flooring, all the units, worktop, sink and all the plaster from the walls (was not in great condition). Left the ceiling!

took about 5 days to completely gut the room and was knackering and v dirty work. Fortunately the weather was good - mild and dry.

had new electrics, was plasterboarded and skimmed before new kitchen was installed.

and the skip was full, literally couldn’t squeeze anything else in. We took up the flooring before the skip was delivered.

When we had a skip we had to pay to suspend a parking space (no off road parking) AND had to pay a ‘skip licence’ of a few hundred quid.

Which all came as a bit of a surprise.

I asked about skip hire on here a couple of years ago and people kindly told me about hippo bags and rubbish men. In the end I piled it all up in the front garden and a man came and took it all away. A LOT cheaper than a skip would've been
