If you’re dieting how do you stay strong as the day goes on?

I start off each day really determined but often get hungry in the evenings and find it so hard not to snack. Any tips?
Afternoons can be a challenge too.
Generally my meals are healthy but I struggle with snacking,

Fruit, nuts, big bowl of homemade veggy soup. Maybe a cheese sandwich to wash it down with. I work odd hours, but don't feel hungry. I've totally cut out sugar, that helps.

Weight loss injections! The only thing that worked for me. Depends how much weight you have to lose though.

Everythingaches · 15/11/2024 20:51

i don’t qualify for weight loss injections as I don’t have enough weight to lose and I wouldn’t them anyway but thank you 😊

I’ve tried to cut out sugar but didn’t have enough willpower!

Hungry or actually just habit?

I build a snack into my calorie count for the day. (Like you it's an evening one, to accompany some pills.) Have a drink instead. A garlic stuffed olive can fool me into thinking I've snacked.

(Can I just add how much I loathe the word snack 😂)

Everythingaches · 15/11/2024 20:54

Not sure if hunger or habit. Sometimes I clean my teeth which helps.

I have to be very strict, I can't just have a bit of something because it becomes a free for all.

I'm best off with 3 good filling meals a day and absolutely no snacks.

Samphire44 · 15/11/2024 20:58

With sugar you really just need to go cold turkey. A week or 2 of cravings and then you will be free of them. The key to not being hungry is upping fibre and protein. Also make sure you stick to the same eating window as your body will adjust to only being hungry then. I have a shut off time for eating each day and after a few days of restraint no longer get hungry after this time.

Within your eating window allow yourself to eat if hungry but make sure it is either high fibre or high protein. Avoid the refined carbs as they will make you feel more hungry.

Punnets of berries for snacking

Aria999 · 15/11/2024 21:24

I eat cheese, which fills me up and doesn't seem to cause weight gain.

I have cut down on sugar ( not given it up though!) and upfs too. And I have almost given up bread. I believe hunger later in the day is often the result of carb crash, low carb is therefore helpful.

green tea (japanese to avoid lead content!) appetite suppressant. lots of water.

Green tea’s an appetite suppressant?
Where do you buy Japanese green tea?

You just accept the fact that you will get hungry in the evenings and factor it in.

Have healthy snacks ready to go and reduce the calories earlier in the day so you are eating the same total just more spread out.

You can't willpower yourself out of getting hungry.

RickiRaccoon · 15/11/2024 21:34

Identify what time/circumstance you tend to snack unhealthily and work out the best way for you to avoid it.

Taking a shower and going to bed early for a couple of weeks helped me get out of the habit of evening snacking. Once you've broken a habit and got results, it's easier to just not eat for the sake of it.

Otherwise, keep the snacks but do a lower calorie option or portion control with a very small bowl. Or have a low calorie drink instead.

Delorian · 15/11/2024 21:35

I have a low cal hot chocolate or a cup of redbush tea and a single wrapped lunchbox style chocolate bar, like a penguin. That keeps me reined in a bit. If I open a bar of dairy milk the entire thing would be gone in 5 mins.

travailtotravel · 15/11/2024 21:37

Sometimes I go for a walk ...teeth, shower, early bed with a book. Avoiding alcohol most nights. Planning calories through day.

Divebar2021 · 15/11/2024 21:40

Are you actually eating enough calories ?

LovelyDaaling · 15/11/2024 21:42

I can often fend off the urge to snack by drinking another cup of tea.

Disturbia81 · 15/11/2024 21:48

Grapes, protein bars, pack of ready to eat chicken

Everythingaches · 15/11/2024 21:50

I think just lose momentum, I do well for two weeks then it just gets too hard

Sometimes thinking ooo Im hungry, that must mean Im loosing weight right now helps

Drink a pint of cold cold water

1 square of 85% dark chocolate..and a small square, not half the bar

Just not having anything snacky in the house

Eating a ryvita with a small smear of good butter really really slowly

Doing something else that provides a lot of sensory stimulus, sometimes I think I want to snack because my senses are bored iyswim

If you’re on this cycle weight loss injections like Mounjaro are the only thing that will quell the food noise. You’ll realise what it’s like to be a normal functioning human not always thinking about how to eat less whilst wanting more.

Everythingaches · 15/11/2024 21:55

I’m not getting weight lose injections. My bmi is 27.

Ok cool. Fight with yourself constantly and post on a social forum about how you’re losing the battle then!

fruitpastille · 15/11/2024 22:04

I'm similar. Eternally wanting to be 10 lbs less than I am. Mine is not necessarily hunger as such. Just really fancy a delicious something or other and lack discipline. I almost rebel against the whole idea of denying myself. Ridiculous yet I keep doing it.
