Has anyone read this Independent article about toxic levels Mercury in Tuna? Now I'm worried as we have tuna in sandwiches or in dinners at least 3 times a week (and have done for years and my children's whole lives).

Activists want tinned tuna banned after toxic levels of mercury found

Consumer advocates warn of ‘colossal risk to public health’ as authorities accused of agreeing to high threshold

That article is full of 'might' & 'could' - despite 50 years of Europeans eating tinned tuna (not to mention the decades of people in places like Asia eating it fresh/raw) there is no clear link to any illness etc.
There are recommended intake limits which people need to consider. But ultimately until/unless they can clearly state eating tuna causes x - it should be viewed as a food to be eaten in moderation like everything else.

FDA says 2 - 3 portions per week with a google

that's been known for ages and the recommendation has been for a while to limit large predator fish to 'ocassional', i.e. a couple of times a month max.

We were being told this back in the 80s when I was pregnant the first time. Guidelines even back then were 2 tins a week max.

I thought the (relatively) high levels in tuna were well known (plus the rule of thumb not to consume it more than 2? 3? times a week).

It was very much talked about when the antivaxxers had latched on to mercury in vaccines being undesirable, when in reality they were way lower than you get from eating tuna. Though I suppose it's less chattered about now the mercury-based adjuvant has been removed from children's vaccines.

If it were true millions of people would've dropped down dead by now. Tinned tuna is vastly consumed across Europe, UK, USA, Thailand etc.
If you were eating kilos of it daily then maybe there's a worry but I honestly would not stop eating it. It's a very good source of protein and can be good value.

Not mercury related specifically but just a FYI that the NHS recommends 2 portions or less of oily fish a week for girls under 5 due to chemicals.

Thanks. How much is a portion? I think we've gone over, weekly, forever!
