I found a ladybird in the kitchen this afternoon and they are still here ... seems very slow ... I have put them in the fruit basket, well the banana basket ... not sure what should I feed them as it is way too cold outside to go in the garden ... isn't it ...

What should I do Mumsnet ...

At this time of year?😱

I'd put it outside so something can eat it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/11/2024 19:53

It's looking for somewhere to hibernate I expect, it's probably gone into a window / door crevice and gone too far and ended up inside. DPs can't open their windows over winter or they get 100s falling into the house, quite amazing to see them all huddled up together though.

They eat bugs - greenfly etc - so the bananas are probably safe. I think I'd put it outside on the window frame hope it has another go at finding a safe spot.

It might eat some sugar water I guess, but don't know if that's the right thing to do.

Ok well the bananas seem to be doing the trick for now ...

Thanks MN!

As previous poster said it is trying to hibernate. Put it outside somewhere sheltered and relatively warm- box with big holes in filled with leaves or proper insect hotel. If it stays in it might be fooled by the heating to think it is spring. Use a small brush or something to knock it into a box.

Ok I am on it!

The Ladybird/Ladybug hotel is under construction!

Thanks MN!

Oh and just to confirm we have not put the heating on yet!

We are holding out until 1 December ... if we can!

We get a cluster in the corner of our bedroom this time of year. I leave them to it. They all fly away in the new year, I don't know when, really. They just seem to disappear. We air the bedroom all day, so I guess they quietly fly off when they're ready.

ohyesido · 14/11/2024 20:30

Why would you feed it? They aren't protected like bees they're no different to flies or any other insect are they?

PickledMuffin · 14/11/2024 20:34

they hibernate. during the winter months loads of them used to sleep in the corner of our shared hallway.

It's a living being doing no harm and OP is being kind. Are you always such a misery?

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/11/2024 20:37

Awwww, such a cute thread. 😆

How kind of you to look after the sweet ladybird @MsAdaLovelace ! 🐞

MsAdaLovelace · 15/11/2024 10:52

Ok, Morning MN!

So the Ladybird/Ladybug update .... all is fine, the bananas seem to have worked and we are putting them in the shed now, it was too cold and dark last night, in the Ladybug Hotel as suggested MN!

Save The Ladybugs as they are a sign of good luck, abundance, fortune, true love and grace MN ... depending on which definition we are going with according to Google!

Have a lovely w/e MNs and Thank You for all your fab suggestions too.
