My DS has dyspraxia and has also been referred by the school for an autism diagnosis. He has serious anxiety and some days struggles to stay in his lessons or just sits there crying - but he still goes in every day...

Now 4 things.. all in one day

  1. He's in year 8 and for the first time since the end of year 5 came home today with an invitiation to a birthday party - you can't even imagine how pleased he is
  2. For the first time since he got to senior school he said "I ate lunch with my friends today" I think this is the first time I've heard the word "friends" since the end of primary school
  3. He came joint second in his class in recent science assessment with 43/46 - considering that most of the way through year 7 and up to a couple of weeks ago he normally wouldn't stay in the room long enough to finish the test that is absolutely amazing.
  4. He had his English assessment today and said that he wrote several paragraphs and thinks he did quite well

Oh my god I'm sitting here crying I'm so proud of him and I feel like hugging the boy who's included him in his party

Congratulations OP! That's wonderful. He's done so well

We have dyspraxia in the family and it's often not well understood but it's so hard

Oh I'm really happy for you both ☺️

Tina159 · 14/11/2024 18:18

DS has ASD and dyspraxia so I know how hard it can be. What a fantastic day he's had! Maybe you could get him a bag of sweets or something to share with his new friends tomorrow. I hope this is the start of his happiness and confidence going up and up!

JassyRadlett · 14/11/2024 18:22

Well done that boy and well done his mum too. Epic work and determination on his part and epic parenting to support him.

Have school been supportive? If so it might be worth an email to his tutor or whoever the key person is just to flag how things have come together for him so they can know that whatever they are currently doing is providing the right framework? (If they haven't been that helpful, then even more well done to him and you!)

SingingSands · 14/11/2024 18:36

I'm sitting here smiling for him too OP - and you! X

I have autistic teens so fully appreciate how massive this is☺️

IamChocLover · 14/11/2024 19:40

That's really great OP - for what it's worth, I worked with the Dyspraxia Foundation - Daniel Radcliffe has been quite open about his life with Dyspraxia. You're probably already aware but wanted to share it just in case.

Motnight · 14/11/2024 19:41

Thank you all of you.

I let him stay up late (10pm) to finish watching a film as a reward for doing so well in science.

I know it will be a very bumpybroad, always jas been hut yesterday made up for a lot.

There is a member of the SENCO team who has been absolutely amazing for him dealing with every melt down, making sure he gets as much help as she can swing for him and generally being g his safe person. She was rhe first person he went racing to to tell his science score to and she emailed me saying how much she loves moments like this when her pupils do really well at something.
