Books for 9yr old ds

I'm after book recommendations for ds1.

He has loads of books, if we go to a book shop he will pick a harry potter or similar, but they're just too big/long to hold his attention. He will then pick up Dog man . I feel like he needs something in between
I'd like to find him some shorter length books that are not too "young" for him.

He reads very well, and is very bright. Work at greater depth in maths and English.

Any suggestions please.

Have you posted on the Children's Books section?
Has he read How to Train your Dragon? Horrible Histories?
Swallows and Amazons has bedtime-friendly chapter lengths, if you think he might go for it.

Try your local library?

If he's into football I recommend Football academy, boys united series by Tom Palmer. My ds absolutely loved them at that age

I didn't realise there was a children's books section. He's not into football.

We do go to the library, but he chooses books he doesn't read.

I'll check out these suggestions, thanks.

My dd liked the Podkin one-ear series, might work for your ds if he likes a bit of swashbuckling fantasy.

My DD (nearly 8) is loving the diary of a wimpy kid books. She's younger than your son but I think they do also suit older children

My 9 year old likes dog man etc and I've been trying to get him to read other books that need more of an attention span as he's more than capable. He's enjoyed the worst class in the world, the creakers - in fact any by Tom Fletcher, the Christmas pig. I think he'd like just William if he tried them. He also has Noah's gold by frank Cottrell Boyce which he's enjoying too

BlueChampagne · 14/11/2024 16:00

How about graphic novels, such as the Amulet series?

Allnewtometoo · 14/11/2024 18:07

@UnalliterativeGeorge he's read all the "worlds worst" series, and quite a few David Walliams and also Tom Gates. I might see if there are any new ones he hasn't read. They "better" than dog man. He reads the whole book in bed. Obviously I don't mind him reading them but I do feel he ought to he reading others alongside.

@BlueChampagne again I feel like these wouldn't take 2 minutes to read, he could do with some chapter books that aren't too long, or too easy.
