Perimenopausal, anaemic, periods getting heavier. What are my options?

I'm in my late 40s and I've always struggled with my iron levels. A year ago I was feeling particularly crap and a blood test revealed my ferritin was 4.

GP was disinterested but I'm fortunate to have private health insurance and was able to arrange an iron infusion. The doctor who ran the iron clinic explained that some people are just poor at absorbing iron, and for menstruating women in particular, diet and even oral supplements often aren't enough - we will just loose iron faster than we can replace it.

I felt much better after the infusion, but was warned that unless I can fix the heavy periods I'd be back to square one in a year. Which is exactly what has happened - over the past few weeks I've been feeling crap again.

To make matters worse, my periods are getting even heavier and also closer together - over the past year, my cycle has shrunk from 5 weeks to 3.5 weeks.

I tried tranexamic acid which worked well but unfortunately gave me very bad headaches, so that's out. The iron doctor urged me to try the mirena coil, which I was reluctant to do because I've had friends/close relatives who have had very poor experiences with it from a mental health perspective. Perhaps I do need to try it though, because I've probably got another five years of this.

I'd be really interested in hearing from anyone else has had a similar experience and if anything has helped you?

Thanks!

I was also advised to consider the coil but am a few years older than you and decided against it.
I've taken various iron supplements and have got my levels fairly stable. I take extra during/just after my period.

The mini pill has made my previously heavy periods pretty light.

Also, are you taking iron supplements? It’s something you really need to stay on top of after the infusion.

Hello, I had heavy periods, anaemic, but now it is lighter now. GP recommended Tranexamic acid and took Ferrous fumarate. The iron supplement may or my not help some women. Some got headaches and digestion problems. I was ok on them. Btw, heard good and bad stories about the coil. Someone also suggested the pill, but you have to be a certain age.
Perimenopause can mess our bodies up. Keep up with your iron levels. Ask your doctor for blood tests, not just for iron deficiency, B12, Vit D etc. xx

Endometrial Ablation was completely life changing for me - periods vanished, life long anaemia resolved, weight stabilised & anxiety improved.

I love my coil. The amount of hormone that gets into your system to be able to affect mood is absolutely tiny. I didn’t notice it at all. I have just a small amount of spotting now each month. No remembering tablets etc.

I was on the combined pill taking packets back to back so that I only had a bleed every other month. That helped control things better but I don't think you can stay on it once you hit 50. Like many posters above I wasn't keen on a mirena and so since turning 50 I've been having to pay for iron infusions privately on a regular basis. Without them I reach a stage where I'm really struggling.

Hysterectomy at 46 was life changing - best thing I did.

Mirena sorted it for me. And now take HRT and the mirena acts as the progesterone. I would have no hesitation in trying it if I were you.

CapaciousHandbag · 17/11/2024 19:36

Love my Mirena. Also works to balance the oestrogen part of my HRT. Went from
flooding so badly I couldn’t leave the house some days, and being constantly anaemic, to slight spotting that barely needs a pantyliner a few days a month.
