Day trip from Manchester recommendation

We're having a no kids weekend based in Manchester.

Where is a nice town or city withjn say 45 minute train ride? We like Victorian architecture and history (love an old mill building) cafés and leisurely pottering.

Already been to Leeds Harrogate Knaresborough Bolton Rochdale Bury Altrincham. Thanks.

Hebden Bridge?

Femalefootyfan · 14/11/2024 10:28

How about Chester? It’s 50 minutes on the train, beautiful city.

MousePolice · 14/11/2024 10:35

Clitheroe. Holmes Mill is a converted mill now a cinema, cafe, pub.

Latenightreader · 14/11/2024 10:38

I came to suggest Clitheroe - very interesting museum/castle, lovely shops, a couple of good eating places, a Booths... it was one of my favourite day trips when I lived in Bury.

Dollybantree · 14/11/2024 10:38

Chester is lovely. Haworth in Yorkshire is too but not sure how long on a train.

Dollybantree · 14/11/2024 10:41

If you do go to Chester have afternoon tea in the Chester grosvenor - The Olive Tree is lovely too (it’s in the Rows which are lovely) also do a walk around the Roman walls and visit the open air Roman spa remains (you’ll see it from the wall). Chester cathedral is gorgeous.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 14/11/2024 10:49

Agree with Hebden in your suggested time range. If you did want to go a bit further Haworth is great, and of course Saltaire for your old mills.

Pedallleur · 14/11/2024 11:04

hebden, Todmorden, halifax, Huddersfield, Leeds. Edale (on way to Sheffield) or Hope. Clitheroe. there is a Rover ticket for the Manchester area that will get you to Glossop (v.nice there)

Thanks everyone!

We managed to miss the races when we went thankfully

Glossop is over populated and not really much to do, I wouldn't recommend if I'm honest.

Floralsofa · 15/11/2024 16:46

Will second Haworth

CoffeeINeedCoffee · 15/11/2024 16:59

Buxton?

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 15/11/2024 17:04

@girltrucker agree with Clitheroe - lovely small town, Holmes Mill is fab, the Emporium for coffee/food (haven't been recently though), Booths, there's a castle, river and incredible wine shop, Byrne's.

RenoDakota · 15/11/2024 17:25

Hebden Bridge seems to have everything you are looking for. And is very easy to get to on the train from Manchester Victoria.
As other posters have mentioned, Haworth is beautiful too but is much more difficult to get to on public transport.

It's a local place for local people.

WifeOfMacbeth · 15/11/2024 17:55

I'd go to Styal. Plenty to see at Quarry Bank Mill, plus some nice walking nearby.
