im 39 and in the space of 4 years and 2 pregnancies I’ve gone from someone agile and young looking/feeling to things hurting when I sit up too fast. when I tried to show my daughter a bridge, well my wrists were about to snap.

my weight is fine.

But I suddenly feel like my mind is decades younger than my body.

anyone out there feel physically young into their 40s/50s/60s etc

OP posts:

And yes to how expensive everything is. I moan about it every day. Shops cafes and restaurants are just taking the Mick. It seems they can just charge what they like whilst offering less and less. Why do we put up with it?

Sourisblanche · 14/11/2024 07:27

I’m 50 and feel fit and healthy, take care with diet, wine intake and exercise. I’ve been mountain biking this week and felt fine and energetic.

But! I started a craft group yesterday and picked up and old project to finish for Christmas and omg wow - my eyesight is not what it was and I found it really hard to tell some of the thread colours apartConfused

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 14/11/2024 07:34

I'm 55 and not yet - my mother is 94, lives independently in all respects and is both mentally and physically active. She says she doesn't feel old inside and to be fair, doesn't have any health issues. Hoping it's genetic.

Spacecowboys · 14/11/2024 07:40

Physically, I feel as healthy in my mid 40’s as in my 20’s. But I noticed aging at around 35.

Fgfgfg · 14/11/2024 07:48

61 now but at 55 the eyesight started deteriorating, now the hearing is on the way out, small sprains and knocks hurt more and for longer, developing arthritis in hands. However, still have very few wrinkles and almost no grey hair.
The biggest sign of ageing though has been music. I've always loved music, always gone to loads of gigs, liked lots of new stuff, but I've turned into my nan... What is that rubbish? It also explains the hearing loss caused by too much bass and too many years standing near the speakers.

Bananamanlovesyou · 14/11/2024 07:49

Mid forties and some days or weeks I feel great and others I feel about a hundred.
I’m assuming it’s menopause related. I’ve taken up some light strength training and I’m trying to eat well and lose weight. My anxiety is off the scale some days though. I just wake up in the morning and try and base my day around how I’m feeling 😂 what else can you do? Wondering if HRT may help

autienotnaughty · 14/11/2024 07:50

@PrincessHoneysuckle thank you. 🙏🏻 are you taking oestrogen and progesterone?

unsync · 14/11/2024 07:56

56 and I'm still waiting. Hopefully just about to reach menopause. That process is brutal, but it hasn't made me feel old. I get a bit of brain fog, but I've always been a head in the clouds type, so I just go with it. I do exercise regularly though, so I'm mobile, flexible, strong and have stamina. I think this makes a big difference.

Alcardo · 14/11/2024 08:00

Two pregnancies in four years will do that to you. You're not old, OP, I bet you feel a lot better in another two years.

I’m in my mid thirties, I’m very active, but on Tuesday I put my back out when I shoo’d a fly away from my food with my hand/arm. I now make that sound when I get up from a low bed or chair.

Yes I’m mid forties and make “that sound.” My dc look a mixture of worried, appalled and embarrassed when I do it and I remember feeling the same slightly disgusted bafflement at the drama of “that sound” when I was a child - only it was my grandmother making it, not my mother. 😒

honeylulu · 14/11/2024 08:02

Really noticed a difference around 47-48. It was stark because I was a "young" nearly 46 year old when we went into lockdown and then worked at home for the best part of two years and really noticed the difference when I started commuting to London again.

I had already got arthritis but despite exercising every day I was stiff and aching and an old knee injury is now very unstable and needs a brace. My hands were noticeably more painful and would seize up. Feet get very painful - i still have a huge selection of shoes but most days i can only face the same pair of slip in trainers with orthopedic insoles. I had also developed arthritis on one side of my jaw and often can't open my mouth properly. Alas that has not led to weight loss, I've never shifted the "covid stone" which arrived in those years. And my eyesight was markedly worse (short sightedness not long) partly from many hours peering at my laptop screen in my tiny study, but also just age I guess. I had my eyes lasered about 18 years ago - lifetime guarantee my arse!

In my head I'm much younger than I am (50). I think of myself as about 35. I don't look too bad facially but my knees feel about 100.

Thischangeseverything · 14/11/2024 08:03

Around 41 but that's because my sport is full of 20 year olds and I feel a bit pathetic competing with people who could be my child. I can also see my performance is deteriorating compared to 10 tears ago.

Outside of that I feel quite young!

61 and not feeling old in a negative way.

I just carry on being me.

Some MNetters love to think themselves old.

I can assure you many of us do not.

isitme111 · 14/11/2024 08:08

52 - for me menopause played a huge part.

Anisty · 14/11/2024 08:11

For the first time this year - and only this past 3 months really. I am about to turn 58.

I am about 2 stone overweight. I am really hoping that my aches will shift if i get the weight off. I have been getting some very mild pain in one hip when i set off to walk after sitting for a while. It wears off once i get going.

And some neck ache in the morning after a night asleep. Maybe a new pillow might fix that.

I should say i do not keep myself in the fittest condition as regards food or exercise so i have done this to myself.

My friend aged 65 who does pilates and is slim is much fitter than i am.

  1. My health dipped, menopause was horrific and I ran out of energy.
Flipzandchipz · 14/11/2024 08:16

Been thinking about this a lot recently. I’m nearly 40. Had 1DC at 37, I am tired constantly, have no time or energy to properly exercise although I do try walk a lot, I go out each lunchtime when working from home. DC is a terrible sleeper, rarely sleeps through. I look tired, my scalp feels dry, none of my clothes fit properly after putting on weight post baby, I was thinner after giving birth but I didn’t eat as healthily as I should during mat leave. When I get a cold it floors me. The last 2 weeks have been crap. DH and I work just shy of full time hours but compress them for childcare. DC has been poorly, I’ve then caught it, work has been manic with some difficult situations to deal with, am just taking each day as it comes but I am feeling old today. I am currently trying to wake myself up after an awful sleep, not caused by DC funny enough but I just couldn’t get to sleep, too much whirring round my brain. I am wanting to change things but I do think it will be easier when DC gets to school age. Feeling like we’re in the trenches at the moment

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/11/2024 08:17

I’m 50 and don’t feel old

Berlinlover · 14/11/2024 08:18

If you get on the right HRT - 100% it will take your anxiety away completely (if hormones are the cause)

moggerhanger · 14/11/2024 08:21

In the last couple of years (I'm 51). Bits of me ache and are stiff, my eyesight is worse, eye bags are worse. I'm also completely invisible in shops. But never mind, it's better than the alternative 😉

Slanketweather78 · 14/11/2024 08:22

Aged 60 feeling fat and unfit!

Those of you who are forty - or fifty - it’s not too late to start exercising! And looking after your weight. Take this as your motivation please if you need any!

I wish I had started looking after myself a decade or two decades ago.

Starting now and it’s a bit of a slog to be honest!

doodleschnoodle · 14/11/2024 08:24

Quite surprised at the late 30s people feeling old! I'm 39 and can't say I feel old at all. Turning 40 sounds a bit dramatic but I don't really feel the same way.

I do think some of it is not age related as such but issues to do with being postpartum, sleep deprived and having young kids. My two are 5 and 2 so my body feels now like it's kind of back to normal after the pregnancy and birth years, but I did feel a bit sore and knackered for a couple of years!

FlangeBoil · 14/11/2024 08:26
  1. I'm 29 now. I look very young and got ID'd in the pub this week for a pint (despite having greys since 24!), but I have a chronic condition that causes constant pain and also chronic fatigue syndrome, so I'm always tired and always hurting. I have to ask DP to help me out of bed some mornings, I can't lift DD(4) anymore, my hands are weak and I can't open tins/jars, stir things for long etc.

On the surface, I don't think anyone would guess how old I actually feel, but I guess that's why we don't judge books by their covers!
