What do you use to sharpen your kitchen knives?

Just that really.

Is there something that doesn't cost a fortune, that is easy to use that you'd recommend?
Thanks

A little hand held sharpening device from IKEA. The sharpening stones are set in a groove and you rub the knife through it safely.

a stone post outside the back door

Me too - I've tried all sorts, and whilst I hanker for the little wierd barrel one, I come back to the simple ikea doodad.

Sharpens my knives beautifully - they pass the tomato test (can I just waft it at a tomato and slice it super-thin) with flying colours

I've got a wee thing from Lakeland that was about £14 I think. It's really good.
It's got a rubber bit on the bottom that's meant to stick to the worktop but I can't get it to work properly.

Make sure the work top is reasonably clean and lick the rubber bit and press down.

I use a steel.

FelicityBeedle · 13/11/2024 19:52

I use a honing steel pretty often, and we have a man in a van come by once a year and sharpen my frequently used ones and my fabric scissors

My tongue 😂. Joking, I splashed out years ago on a Knife Wizard. It doesn't sharpen serrated knives it ruins them but great for other blades. My partner has a handheld sharpener and I also have a sharpening steel but I feel like a butcher when I use that.

A whetstone. Takes a bit of practise but with care you can get your knives terrifyingly sharp.

Irridescantshimmmer · 13/11/2024 20:08

Whetstone.

Are the best things I have ever used for sharpening knives as well as scissors.

Tiedyesquad · 13/11/2024 20:09

I use DH. He sharpens them in some way I wot not of.

Bottom of any footed ceramic bowl. The foot is never glazed when it’s placed in the kiln, so the ceramic is rough enough to sharpen knives. I run the flat of the blade across the foot, the same way I’d use a steel.

FixTheBone · 13/11/2024 20:14

Used to use any anysharp, which was pretty good for the money, I now use a Horl sharpener, which is much better, but much, much more expensive.

The rough bit of the bottom of a cup here, same technique. Works perfectly.
