What do you say to someone who opens their car door onto yours...

... and it leaves a scratch?

Full disclosure I have no way of proving it but I know that I washed my car by hand yesterday and there was no scratch. Today I return to my car and a (very new looking) white car is parked next to me, there is white paint on my car and a big scratch above it, roughly in line with where their car door would open onto mine.

I know whose car it is but I've no real idea how to broach the subject or what to say. I've gotten the paint off and while it's a big ugly scratch I'm pretty sure the scratch will buff out but that's not the point really and they clearly weren't to know that. It looks like it was quite a forceful open.

I'm asking here I guess because my first instinct is to go barrelling in and tell them off. But I'm trying to be more considered with my responses and keep my stress levels low. So advice about how to handle most effectively (if at all) would be greatly welcomed!

I would do the same to their car. Then drive off 👋

Doesn’t that just double damage your own car?

Ok, I thought I was asking about response.

Thank you to those of you who have responded with examples of similar woe. Reassuring that I'm not alone but yes I get it. One of those things.

I do think there are people who will happily crunch the car door next to them without a second thought but would equally be furious if someone did the same to them. Very different to an accidental ding. I will always try to be careful and it's disappointing when others clearly aren't. But yes it's the world we live in. I get it.

I'm the opposite. I'd be mortified if I dinged someone else's car and would apologise if they were anywhere nearby. But I'd shrug it off without a second thought if it happened to my car.

I honestly wouldn't care about a scratch or two. A big ding maybe but scratches happen and are no big deal.
