How long do you expect a tv to last?

Samsung, Smart TV, kept up to date with software etc, used on average 8-10 hours per week. Cost around £800 on sale (can’t remember RRP).

How many years would you expect to get from something like this? Provided no damage was done to it etc.

Our current TV is about 10-12 years old (none of the inbuilt apps work any more but we have a Roku stick so it doesn't matter) and the one before that was about 8 years old but we sold it for reasons I can't remember. Like a PP, I have a DP who seems to think TVs need replacing every few years even if they still work Confused

For 3.5 years I'd possibly try and complain. Consumer legislation means it should last a reasonable length of time which, as demonstrated by this thread, is considerably longer than 3.5 years.

Moneysaving Expert has a good guide to the process and a link to their Resolver reclaim tool but realistically I don't know if people win as it's hard to enforce your rights so most people don't bother.

My Samsung TV is about 14 years old and in full working order, with excellent picture quality. It's not connected to the internet and we don't use any smart features - we have Sky.

Same. The sound has gone a bit but we use a little soundbar and it is fine.

@Pumpkinseason3 if your TV has lasted less than five years I would take it further, as it is not fit for purpose. Dean Dunham, who does a consumer programme on LBC, often says that even if goods are out of warranty you are can still take action if they have not lasted a reasonable amount of time.

Our Samsung is 13yrs old and works perfectly (hope I don’t jinx it now!). We use a firestick.

BobnLen · 13/11/2024 09:32

We have a 2015 Samsung upstairs which is fine, we also have from around 2005, 26" Panasonic in the caravan which came from DM when she died which seems to be going on forever, it's not smart but you could use a Roku or Firestick if you wanted.

I find it interesting that my of us have Tvs more than 10 years old... but barely any mention of them being 5-10 years old.

Things aren't made to last now. It feels pointless thinking "my last one was a Phillips and lasted this long" because they don't have the same longevity now.

Bought a 50 inch Samsung from Argos, Noticed after two months when I was watching certain things on YouTube massive black lines all the way over the screen, A bit like screen burn. Became unusable after three months.

Replaced it with same tv, Exact same issue with the new one. Also three months..

Replaced with a Toshiba which was perfectly fine until my cat knocked it over and it smashed into a million pieces, so I won't count that one lol.. Lasted four days if you want to count it lol..

Gave it a year and bought another Samsung, exact same screen burn issues as the previous two.. I just live with it now.. Big black lines everywhere there is a white screen.

So my record is four tv's in 18 months 🤣

I have a Samsung from 2012 that still works great except its a smart TV and they don't support most of the apps on it anymore, which is incredibly frustrating. Its been a good 4-5 years since the app support stopped and its got loads of life left in it, I refuse to get a new one just because no one wants to make apps for it.

BloodyHellBob · 13/11/2024 10:18

@Pumpkinseason3 our Samsung lasted 2.5 years and I was bloody livid. We now have an LG and I'm seriously praying it lasts longer!

LimeLime · 13/11/2024 10:29

Easily a decade, and I always get Dad's old one, so he's usually had it five years already and now fancies an upgrade. My latest one, a Sony, has been doing too well for his liking as I have had it much longer than ten years and he really wants to pass me down his current model and upgrade.

Sortumn · 13/11/2024 10:30

Ours is Samsung. It replaced ours old crt TV and must be about t 14/15. I'd quite like a larger one but it has survived everything so far, including the cats trying to catch things on the screen.

Oneblindmouse · 13/11/2024 10:40

My Samsung Smart TV is around 12 years old. It works fine but I also have issues with some apps which are no longer supported. I only have Freeview channels but also a PVR box so I can record stuff. I have a Fire Stick too, that I use if having trouble with old apps. The smart search works better on the Fire Stick than the TV as well.

BobnLen · 13/11/2024 11:00

The apps on the TVs are not much good anyway even when they do work, our main Samsung TV is 3 years old so all the apps are current but they often drop out so we mainly use the ones on Sky or Apple TV which always seem to work.

This is why I'm massively resisting the move to smart TVs. They're one of the biggest cons out there. You can actually plug a Sky box and a DVD player into a computer monitor, and that's probably what I'll do when my current TV dies.

bloodredfeaturewall · 13/11/2024 20:34

at least a decade. possibly longer.
our old tv is around 15 years old and needs a fire stick to work as apps are no longer supported.

Teenagerantruns · 13/11/2024 20:35

Our Toshiba smart tv is l think 8 years old no problems at all.we have an old Samsung in bedroom with firestick that's at least 15 years old and still going strong.

Pumpkinseason3 · 14/11/2024 05:19

Thanks all 😊 Glad to see I’m not being that unreasonable expecting longer than 3.5 years 😅 I wouldn’t even care if it was just apps not being supported or a line on the screen etc but it’s completely unusable 🤦🏻‍♀️

Myself and two separate relatives all bought the same LG tv for the world cup in 2010. Mine is still working, my father in laws lasted 2 years, my sister in laws about 6.

Whether it makes a significant difference or not i have a power filter and never powered it off completely, im sure most electronics fail while warming up.
