I get all pearl-clutchy about the mistaken use of myself/yourself when it's so obviously wrong, e.g. "Please get in touch with myself", "I'm writing to ask yourself if we can meet".

However I've just heard "I asked you to work with myself and XX" on a TV show that really should know better and I'm now questioning whether I've misunderstood it's use all along - is the latter example correct and if so, why?!

No it's not correct. It should be, "I asked you to work with me and XX". In English, you use a reflexive pronoun when the subject and object of a verb are the same person or thing, e.g. I looked at myself in the mirror, she cut herself when preparing dinner, we laugh at ourselves every time we play crazy golf.

What was the tv show?

Thank you @NigelHarmansNewWife !

Am I right in thinking that in "I asked you to work with me and XX", "you" is the object?

It was in A Very Royal Scandal, but it was said by a very senior/old-boy official, and it jarred because of that!

The overuse of myself and yourself drives me bonkers....I'm a teacher (not English) and soooo many of my colleagues do this.
That and "I was SAT".....by English teachers 🤦🏻‍♀️
