What works best for nits?

Just found some nits in dd hair. Do I wait for them to hatch and then use over the counter treatment and is there one that works better than the rest?
Also does it work on the nits or just lice?
Is there a better way to rid the nits than combing every one out?
Sorry so many questions, first time finding them.

If you can see eggs, she's almost certainly got live ones too.

I found by far and away the best was the mouthwash Listerine.
Soak the (dry) hair in it, then put it under a shower cap for about 15 minutes. Then wash hair as normal. The nits literally float off, we used to say they were drunk.

You do need to do it two or three times, but it was so less arduous than the horrible over the counter stuff, or combing, that it was much better.

Thanks for the tip I’m going to try this!

we had one family at primary school who had 5 kids spread throughout the year groups who would not deal with this issue and the whole small school was getting reinfected constantly.

I went with combing through overnight conditioning treatment masks (they sort of dry/go crunchy so that your pillow doesn’t get wet) and that smothers any live ones that the combing might have missed.
Then wash and dry in the morning and use straighteners on the dried hair because the straighteners cook any eggs you might have missed and they don’t hatch.

You will need the Nitty Gritty comb. Regular combing with this worked for my kids, although they had fairly manageable hair.

Many years ago this worked for our family.
