Will a doctor prescribe diazepam for a long haul flight?

Not scared for flying or anything. Just have a long overnight flight, arrives at destination in the morning, and I'm sat in economy. If I take some diazepam I should be able to sleep, if I don't, I won't.

They won't prescribe for sleep in that situation

Undisclosedlocation · 11/11/2024 23:04

Bloody hell, I hope not! What an absolute waste of valuable doctors time!

MarigoldSpider · 11/11/2024 23:05

Could you take a drowsy antihistamine instead? I’ve heard GPs suggest those as a sleeping pill before.

That seems a wildly excessive ask for a kip on a plane. Have you been dependent on diazepam? I'd be thinking nytol or something, benzodiazepines are extreme surely?

MissEloiseBridgerton · 11/11/2024 23:06

I'd buy either Nytol or Piriton otc. Likely more effective than the tiny dose of diazepam a doctor would prescribe.

Smartiepants79 · 11/11/2024 23:07

No. It’s a highly addictive, much misused benzodiazepine. Only prescribed for quite serious anxiety.
You can manage with less than optimal sleep for 24 hours.

Just get some nytol. The behind the counter stuff (not herbal). Same effect for sleep as valium for me.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/11/2024 23:13

More and more GPs are no longer prescribing diazepam for fear of flying so I very much doubt they would prescribe to enable you to sleep on a long haul flight. My GP has recently posted a notice on their website giving reasons why they won't do this and a big reason seems to be around people being sleepy. I know other posters have been saying this for a couple of years and I was very grateful that mine still prescribed. Not sure what I'm going to do now.

Livinginaclock · 11/11/2024 23:13

Night nurse, great stuff.

MorrisZapp · 11/11/2024 23:14

God you lucky sods getting the effect of valium from a Nytol! Only actual diazepam lets me doze on flights. It's ridiculous that doctors won't prescribe for this and it's fuelling a horrible flood of counterfeit benzos hitting the market with god knows what in them. Why can't doctors treat us like adults, my old doctor did but he's long retired.

I was going to say the same

Very hard to get and probably at an unreliable dosage.

That stuff is a liquid cosh. I can’t remember the last time I took it, for some foul cold that kept me awake, but I slept like the dead for about ten hours, and felt like I had a slight sleep hangover afterwards.

I wouldn't do this. There's been something in the media only recently about people dying because of fake drugs such as zopiclone/diazepam.

Is this just NHS or would it be possible to get a prescription from a private GP?

Yep.
To be used very few and far between, but it works.

Marvellous drug, I was prescribed it after losing my mum and wasn’t sleeping, my Dr said to view them as a treat of a good nights sleep when I needed them, worked a treat, no side effects for me.

TBH it barely worked on me but I spoke to various pros who said I was in the tiniest minority. I got about 2 hours on it but that was better than none. No chance of getting it for flying though. I hope you are sleeping better now. Life is unbearable when your mind will not switch off and you cant sleep.

Corey28 · 11/11/2024 23:47

Melatonin is a much better option. You can buy it online.

Totally agree with you. It's the whole one size fits all bs with the NHS. I'm quite capable of managing not to get addicted thank you very much and have proved it by managing to never take more than 2 diazepam tablets per year for the past 10 years. But now I can't be trusted. 🙄
