Kindle recommendation for dyslexic 8 yr old

I was keen on buying one of the kindle paperwhite kids for my 8 yr old, who is dyslexic. I noticed though that although you can adjust font size and use the dyslexic-friendly font, they don't seem to have the immersive reading capability, which I'd really like it to have.

Can anyone recommend which kindle or e-reader they have for their dyslexic child please?

Buy Amazon Fire 7 7 Inch 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet – Black | Tablets | Argos
The amazon fire tablet with the kindle app installed might be your best bet. You can activate parental controls very easily (so can lock the device down if you only want him to be using it to read at specific times, for example)

Thanks very much. It's frustrating, as I'd really rather just have the e-reader side of it. The other apps would probably be much more appealing than the kindle one for someone who finds reading so hard. It doesn't seem like I've got that option though. Thanks again 😊

That's exactly why I gave a separate kindle. If I had the option of doing something else on there I'd probably never read again.

If you are doing this to make reading more accessible, has your child read any of the Barrington Stoke books? It's a dyslexia friendly publisher which produces books in dyslexia font with yellow pages and uses texts that marry up reading age with actual age.

I might be wrong but I think the immersive reading capability is only available on kindle fires and the kindle apps. But the parental controls are great IME, it fully locks it down so it basically is just a kindle paperwhite!

The other option would be to get a read aloud pen, and physical books in a dyslexia friendly print (which we did do for DS also, since he ended up using the pen for textbooks as he got older)

DD also has a visual impairment which means she needs a larger font size, so physical books won't work. Being able to increase the font size would give her the chance to learn to read independently.

Really appreciate everyone's advice.

I was considering getting a Kindle Paperwhite Kids for my 8-year-old, who has dyslexia. However, I realized that while you can adjust the font size and use the dyslexia-friendly font, it doesn't offer immersive reading, which I really want.
Can anyone suggest a Kindle or e-reader that works well for children with dyslexia?

I have two ordinary kindles, I use the dyslexia font. The background on them is a sort of grey that I can read on (I prefer blue) as I don't get the 'stars' I sometimes get reading on white.

I make my font larger too. It's so useful and stops the eye strain.

Do you know if a colour change in background or lettering would help? In one of my previous job roles, we tried coloured transparent sheets to see if it was easier to read, sometimes just printing on different colours is enough to ease reading and understanding. Don't know if a kindle paperwhite has this ability though.

After advice here, I ended up sticking with the iPad DD already had and downloading the Kindle App, plus the audio book one. That's made it possible for her to use immersive reading. It's a bit fiddly, but is working really well for us.

Glad you have a solution that works, that is all that really all that matters.
