How would you take colleagues comment?

I made an generalised comment about how if you want a significant pay increase then usually it involves getting a new job.

Colleague said well I got a 10% raise this year so I’m happy. And I was told you started on more than me but I didn’t care because now we’re on the same.

I wouldn’t take it any particular way. You made a point and your colleague disproved it.

Doggymummar · 10/11/2024 15:27

I wouldn't say 10 pc is a significant pay rise is how I would answer

roadrager · 10/11/2024 15:31

It's just a comment. No need to take it in any particular way.

I just find it odd my salary was discussed with her

I wouldn't care. If you're doing the same job then you should have the same wage

CatPlanet · 10/11/2024 17:23

They shouldn’t be discussing that with your colleague surely?

Fireworknight · 10/11/2024 17:25

I agree, how does she know your salary, unless you have recognised NHS pay bands, for example.

It wasn't.

Not necessarily. Two people starting the same job at the same time will not be clones. They will bring varying levels of experience and different skill sets with them. One may well have negotiated a better salary at the interview stage.

It wasn't.

I joined after her (only by a month) in the same job and she got told they were going to be paying me more. I don’t get why this is any of her business.

@Doggymummar you wouldn't? I've heard et had a raise like that, not even with moving jobs.
OP yes I'd ask how they know how much you earn. Surely that's between you and your firm unless it's a grade/band situation

Did your employer tell you they'd discussed your salary with her, or did she tell you herself? If it was the latter, I wouldn't believe her for an instant.
