Car written off, insurance offering too little to replace - anyone knowledgeable aronud?

DP and I were in a collision a week ago -- thankfully everyone concerned was fine but our lovely car was written off.

The other party has admitted fault.

We're now at the stage of looking at the cost for replacing our car - and our insurer, Admiral, is offering around £2k below the price of the exact replacements we can find on AutoTrader. Even more confusingly, Admiral says (and has sent us the PDF to prove it) that the £2k-under price is one they've gotten from Admiral's 'market value' tool.

I just don't know where this number comes from -- it doesn't bear any relation to what we're seeing on AutoTrader.

Admiral is also saying there's 'no haggling' about the amount they're offering us, because 'the regulations have changed' and 'we don't do that any more'.

If anyone knows more about car insurance than I do I'd be really grateful for some insight - basically, is it worth pushing for more or do we just take it on the chin (and never go with Admiral again, obviously).

Thank you!

@hilariousnamehere 'Also be aware that once you have a claim record, even if no fault, premiums go up and if you're over 70, LV won't insure you at all.'

Protected NCB kept my premiums the same after a no-fault accident two years ago.

Do you have a link for the LV age limit, because I googled it & found something saying their age limit was 86 but they've now removed any limit?

I had a terrible time getting the insurance company to fund car repairs, & I'm still waiting to get my excess back!

Yeah, mum has protected NCB too but when switching to another insurer (because the one we're dealing with has been beyond awful even for a no fault claim) you have to declare the claim and it goes up. She was adamant she wasn't staying with the insurers who have treated us so badly and cost us so much time and money (we are still waiting for a complaint response as by the deadline they hadn't even allocated someone to look at it, but what can you do)

No link for LV age limit, they wouldn't give an online quote and I spoke to Which who said that is usually to do with any claim if you're over 70.

@PacificState no useful advice except currently in almost identical situation with different insurer - mum was hit, wrote off car, other driver admitted liability, they offered us way less than we needed to replace her (also petrol and automatic) car although older car so figures lower than yours. We were advised to go through our own insurance rather than the third party claims of other driver and I wish we hadn't - it's been a nightmare and I've lost so much working time to it 😭 have complained, they have extended the amount of time it's going to take them to reply, and we will be taking them to the ombudsman unless they sort out a much better amount for the car, acknowledge their customer service has been worse than shit, and make some serious improvements to their processes.

Also be aware that once you have a claim record, even if no fault, premiums go up and if you're over 70, LV won't insure you at all. My poor mum has had to pay £1025 for her insurance for new (similar to old) car as well as being out of pocket for buying it 😭

Edited to add - I'm glad you also walked away from your accident, and I can't decide whether I'm reassured or furious/despairing that someone else is in the same situation! Insurance companies do seem to always come out on top :(

Edited

My parents are 77 and 76, and still both insured with LV 🤔 And that’s after my father wrote a car off 10 years ago while on holiday. He had the money in the bank before they got home themselves 😂😂

Mnargh! I wonder if it's different if you were already with them? Mum hasn't had an accident in about 30 years until this idiot hit her, so I am fuming still with the unfairness of it all 😭 but that's what we were told, maybe I'll question it next year when I've not lost hours and hours of work time to dealing with someone else's stupid mistake 🙈

It could also be type of car and where they live that determine an insurers appetite for customers. So many variables!

I had an argument with car insurance years ago

My hand brake failed and my car rolled down a very gentle slope about 10ft into a car
I drove a VW up at the time and it hit a Toyota Hilux
No damage to my car and I couldn't see any to his which was also parked
Next thing I get a letter from the insurance and he's claiming for personal injury despite the letter saying both cars were parked and unoccupied!!

It was settled for 3k damage to his Hmm

A year later I get a court letter saying he's taking me to court for an extra 5k. The insurance ended up paying him as it was cheaper than going to court so he got 8k for absolutely nothing

I said to the insurance "they couldn't kill this car on top gear but my little vw up caused 8k of damage rolling into it at 5mph?!"

They offer the Trade price only. So the value of the car less mark up or dealer's profit.
Comes as a shock to many after a write off.
