Tips for not freezing

I’m always so cold and never seem warm enough in winter unless home with heating and electric blanket. My toes often feel numb and my body hurts with how cold I feel. I’ve already started wearing thermals and gloves when I go out. Today I went out with friends for a walk and I wore thermal top thick brushed cotton shirt with a wool vest over the top. Bottoms was thermal leggings with thick leggings over the top. Big thick walking socks walking boots warm Barbour coat with gloves. I was frozen to the core it hurt. I went for dinner a few days ago and i wore thermals and thermal socks just to sit in a warm restaurant. As we are having colder days coming up I really need some tips on staying warmer when out. I have Wool socks lots of thermals gloves warm coats sheepskin lined shoes electric hand warmers. I look two sizes bigger thanks to all my layers.

Do you have a medical condition that causes this? That's not normal. There's cold, then there's what you've just described. Moving about in double digit air temperatures with proper clothing on should not leave you chilled to the core.

Worth a chat with the GP.

You can buy heated vests - we got one from Amazon for my FIL to wear when he's at the stables in winter and he loves it. You can also buy heater gloves, heated socks and a whole host of other things to wear out and a out which at reduce your bulk as well.

That is not normal

Have you been to the doctor?

I mean I feel the cold but what you're describing is not normal if this is true

Ineffable23 · 09/11/2024 22:22

I am a pretty chilly person but what you're describing is pretty extreme.

I usually wear a normal vest, then an M and S thermal long sleeved top, thermal leggings, a dress, warm socks, boots, a cashmere jumper and then a coat, scarf, gloves.

If I am out at a restaurant I would be wearing that lot minus the coat, scarf and gloves. I would be plenty warm enough - obviously that's still a lot of layers but I am not cold once I am wearing them.

Does it improve if you're moving Vs if you're still? I get very cold when I'm still but I warm up fine if I am on a walk or whatever.

I would say cashmere/proper wool jumpers and leather gloves are my two key things you haven't mentioned that help me stay warm.

Tuck everything in
Belly warmer (Google or Amazon)
Electric heated gilet or jacket

Are you underweight OP ? - this can affect your metabolism. Or did you grow up in a very warm country? Both those things have made people I know especially intolerant of cold.

And have you had your thyroid checked? Possible an underactive thyroid might be a problem for you?

Sofaroller · 09/11/2024 22:40

I'm also a cold person. Today I wore a thermal vest, t-shirt, thin jumper and thick jumper to sit in the cinema. Cotton scarf and wool scarf over my legs.

A denim jacket and a lighter winter coat on top outside.

Like pps no one ever believes I can 'be that cold'. I promise I am!

I’m having a blood test for anemia as I was anemic during my pregnancy. I’ve been told I might have fibromyalgia but not sure that would cause me to feel so cold.

I sympathise. I'm freezing too. In my case, it's because the tumble dryer vents out of the window in my bedroom, which is my own fault, but being cold is rubbish for whatever reason.

I have found that wearing overtrousers helps. They are made for hiking, but wear them over my normal trousers.

I find that having tights or thermal trousers under leggings can make me colder for some reason. I get on better with looser trousers with looser overtrousers on top.

I wear a thermal long sleever roll neck top with a roll neck jumper on top. I then wear jersey leggings with over trousers and sometimes knee length boots. I find that a breathable waterproof coat really helps too.

Are you in the west of the country by any chance. When I lived in the west I found that the cold went right through me, because it was very humid cold. I'm now in the east and the air is dry and I don't get nearly so cold. Here the cold just stings my skin rather than going through to my bones as it did before.

Being very thin made me cold when I had long covid and also something called hypovolaemia, which meant I didn't have enough fluid in my body, but that is a more extreme thing. In that case I couldn't get my body temperature above 35.8C. I had to go to the hospital for that. You would know if your body temperature was that low.

My partner is always warm to the touch, and never needs the heating on, whereas I am always cold. He swears by eating Garlic to warm the blood, but I cant stand it.

Princessfluffy · 10/11/2024 11:14

Are you very slim OP?
I think that definitely can affect how warm you feel.

athomemum1 · 12/11/2024 23:42

I wouldn’t say I’m slim I’m a size 12.

You can get electric heated clothing now, might be worth trying?
