There's this great Japanese restaurant in my neighborhood I used to go to a lot, either by myself or with friends (just for the record, it is cozy and not one of those places where you feel embarrassed to go alone). A few months ago I noticed they had a new sushiman, who came across as very friendly and skilled at the job. He even sent me complimentary items, which struck me as a nice way to make a good impression on the customers. Before leaving, I made a point of thanking him for the excellent service, but I wasn't overly friendly, just respectful, at least IMO. Went back there a few weeks later, just greeted him and sat down. Next thing I know, my sushi plate arrives, with little hearts drawn on them with sauce, as well as some complimentary items. I learned later that the complimentary thing was not going on anymore, as he'd been working there for a while now. I didn't know what to do, and when I looked up he smiled and asked if I'd liked it. I felt so embarrassed that I just mumbled thank you. I never went back there ever again, as I thought he might think I was going there for the "free lunch" or the "special sushi with little hearts", even though it really is my favorite restaurant. AIBU to feel that he crossed a line there, and I should never go back?
