MOUTH SURGERY...how to control pain and best foods to eat

CornishTeaTime · 09/11/2024 16:30

So....any advice would be much appreciate on pain relief, foods and healing asap!!!

Wedn night op, dosed up on fentanyl, kept me in. Slept 2 hours.

Thurs in hosp was okish had shot of morphine in morning and waok during day slept alot

Trying to sip on water as dehydrated...they did put me on a drip for 2 hours - should have been 5 hours but they said I could go home after 2 hours so Thurs night home.

Slept ok. 9.30pm till 6am

Friday took ibuprofen during day as felt okish I thought brill no more pain

Didnt sleep last night as in pain, took paracetomol at 1am

Today...worst pain all day can hardly swollow hence not taking much water in as it hursts. Have started on the liquid morphine today which seems to help abit as in it takes the edge off the pain a bit and allows me to drink and eat a little yoghurt, custard etc. Still painful each swollow

DH spoke to pharmasist at Boots today... who suggested keeping to the liquid morphine and if needed ibuprofen inbetween morphine dose. Bottle says morphine only for 3 days.

Pain must be a delay or I was so dosed up leaving hosp its all starting to wear off.

Im so worried about the dehydration my skin is slow pinching back still but I am weeing - 3 times so far

Foods...although not hungry I know Ive got to eat something to help aid recovery. Been told cold desserts for 2 weeks.

Have tried custard pot, managed a third but too creamy worried about being sick

Fromage petite felious bit too thick and creamy

DH is going to get some jelly, will try.

Hopefully Im doing all this right as the hosp didnt give me any real advice on pain just handed me the meds.

Any advice anyone?

What about weetabix. They go super soft. The fibre will help constipation too.

Porridge really cooled to Luke warm maybe add some syrup or something for flavour.

I found both of the above helped me

No cant eat anything with texture hot or warm. Totally smooth and cold for 14 days.

Biona fruit purées are good, they have a few varieties.

I had a lump removed from underneath my tongue as biopsy first. But the lump was not too deep they ended up taking it all out. It was a local. But the healing hurt. More the tip of my tongue as they held it really hard with a clamp.

I was on Codiene. It hurt to swallow. Think I under estimated how much swallowing action your tongue does. I ate liquid room temperature food. Water in a bottle as it was easier to tip down my throat.

the stitches was the worse as they got in the way. They fell out and didn’t dissolve. kero up with the pain killers

YES....the tip of my tongue is tender as well!!!!

Took all the lump out too but it was right at the back of my tongue so had to have a general. Yep can sense the stiches and are making me gag so trying not to think about them, really hope they disolve.

Prune juice would help with the constipation, just a small amount daily, about a quarter of a cup.
Biona pressed vegetable juice would be worth trying, as it's very free flowing, not thick at all. Neither of these juices have "bits" in.

Try stirring a little milk into the yoghurts that are too thick to swallow easily, it would make it similar to the texture of drinking yoghurt like the little bottles of Actimel.
As you start to recover, remember that real Greek yoghurt like Total is high in protein so has more food value, than Greek "style" yoghurt which is made with thickeners.

All good wishes for a speedy recovery, it sounds as though you are having an awful time.

UPDATE MORE ADVICE PLEASE!
Woke this morning in tonnes of pain I need to get a meds plan in place for the day/night as Im bitting and bobbing!

So I can have morphine 2.5ml x 4 a day
And I have paracetomol and ibuprofen

So far I have taken:
7.45am - 2.5ml morphine
11am - 2 paracetomol

How should I continue????

OP posts:
JC03745 · 10/11/2024 11:56

You need to ring the hospital/ward/dental hospital you had the op done at! We don't know what surgery you had or the reason and none of us can know what is going on. You need to get advice from team that did the OP.

I'm sorry but what does this mean? Im bitting and bobbing!
Does it mean clenching your jaw?

CornishTeaTime · 10/11/2024 11:57

Been reading and think the morphine and paracetomol are a better connection

OP posts:
MissEloiseBridgerton · 10/11/2024 12:05

What does your bottle of morphine say dosage wise? 2.5ml is not very much. I'd call 111 for advice.

Brananan · 10/11/2024 14:39

I am pretty sure you can take 10mg of morphine which is 5ml of Oramorph but PLEASE CHECK WITH 111

also add ibuprofen in.

CornishTeaTime · 10/11/2024 15:06

Im allowed 10ml per day total. And says for around 3 days.

So 4 x 2.5ml each dose. DH spoke to the pharmacist at Boots yesterday that the above was correct and we were doing it right.

The 2.5ml is def taking the edge off and combined with paracetomol is helping.

Ive never taken meds really so this is sll new plus I assumed Ive be back on my feet in a day or so!!!!

I am going to call the hosp dept tomorrow and double check - they have no aftercare advice, other than eat cold desserts for 14 days and we will see you in 2 weeks.

OP posts:
Greybeardy · 10/11/2024 16:03

why not phone 111 and get some advice from a real life doctor? That dose of oromorph is pretty homeopathic - they can probably make some sensible suggestions to get things more comfortable.

CornishTeaTime · 10/11/2024 16:44

Thanks for advice, Im comfortable today. Im going to call hosp dept tomorrow as there's other areas I want to ask.

I had oral surgery many years ago. When I woke up they tried to give me toast! I was saved by my sister who brought in a tupperware of fruit cut up very small.

I found very cold things to be the best - particularly sorbet. But like a previous poster, MacDonalds' milkshakes were my best friend.

If I recall, the worst passed pretty quickly so I'm sure you'll be fine soon.

user1471538283 · 10/11/2024 16:51

Oh you poor thing! I was about to say the trick is to keep on top of the pain. Eventually it will ease.

Those little jellies you've been having are really good and get some liquid in as well. Would you try cold mushy Weetabix? Or overnight oats or cold porridge? Cold rice pudding out of a can? You need calories to get better.

I hope you are soon well.

babysoupdragon2 · 10/11/2024 16:59

Get Difflam spray! It will really help.

Have they given you a follow up appointment?

0600- paracetamol and morphine
0800 -(after breakfast) ibuprofen
1200- paracetamol and morphine
1400- ibuprofen
1800- paracetamol and morphine
2200- ibuprofen
Midnight - paracetamol and morphine

Been told nothing bitty/textured just cold smooth desserts.

When I got on the ward from the recovery suite, they tried to give me a cup of tea, luckily my DH said NO!!!! The DR had said nothing hot for 2 weeks 🤷‍♀️

I got through a whole bottle of liquid morphine and came off it with no issues, don't be scared of it

Just use the morphine, you need it plus ibuprofen and paracetamol. Stay on top of all of them for a week at least, set an alarm so you don't forget.

Dh had soup, poached eggs, mashed potatoes, custard, yoghurt, chocolate pudding, the secret was little and often rather than trying to eat a lot on one go.

Thanks, what surgery did your DH have? Mouth? @LoafofSellotape
I think some savoury food will help with my sickness and all the meds. Just waiting on Dr at hosp to call said would be around 6ish

I had throat damage after a pretty rough emergency intubation.

Good foods were cold consommés, greek yogurt and kefir, jelly and sorbets/ice creams. Also tomato juice. Iced coffee and tea.

You can make simple consommés by making and cooling down (eg) hot Bovil drinks, oxo cubes in boiling water, and thin tomato soups with seasonings.

Pain relief was opioids, NSAIDs, and paracetamol cranked up to 11 on the Dobly - but we had to argue for that. In the end the Hospital Pain Nurse (who knew?) turned up and had words with the ward nurses who were trying to deny me prescribed tramadol and feed me meatballs. Good luck, OP Flowers Pain relief in some departments is a joke in England.

Consomme sounds good.

Dr called said it will be at least 2 weeks for pain to subside, to keep taking the meds even morphine. Ear ache will all be related as long as no discharge from ear or a temperature. If any of the latter to go to ear, nose and throat at hosp. And I CAN have some foods such as cooled soup...I said the junior dr told me only cold puds for 2 weeks so she nope...as 5 days post op and no bleeding small amounts of food is ok.

Im trying some tomato soup just waiting for it to cool right down. Hoping it yakes away this sick feeling

I'm glad you are managing to swallow some soups now @CornishTeaTime . Try stirring in some single cream or gold top milk to increase the calorie content, as well as making them easier to swallow. You could try pea soup or potato & leek soup, especially if you've got some type of blender to make sure they are completely smooth.
If you like iced tea, M&S do a lovely one with peach juice, which isn't over sweet.
Get well soon!

AdaColeman · 11/11/2024 19:12

PS. Baxter's lobster bisque, and their cream of asparagus are both smooth IIRC.
