Smoking in church

Did this ever used to be commonplace? I can imagine it was legal just like smoking inside everywhere else was but did people actually used to do it?

Bet the archbishop of Canterbury’s been having a crafty drag in Westminster abbey the past few days.

Outside the side door was littered with fag butts (70s/80s Irish Catholic London) - loads of men left at communion (avoiding communion but departure not 'noticed' in the shuffling about) -- lots just stood at the side door - arrived late / left early for a fag and on to the pub / Irish club with their mates for a lunchtime session before rolling home to the wife a kids steaming at 3ish for a roast.....

I'm 69 and never seen it either.

No. We just got smoked out by the incense.

I'm 62 and I've never seen it.

Well my late father was a church organist and regularly smoked in the organ loft, often in the middle of the service the priest also smoked like a chimney but only in the vestry. Never in the church sanctuary itself

Never seen it…..I used to go every week at one point i my youth ( I’m 59)
