I've been told not to get a washer/dryer as they are problematic

Moving into a new house and don't have room for a dryer and washing machine so was going to get a washer dryer but my friend said she knows a few people that have had bad experience with them, not washing clothes properly, breaking down etc.
What is your experience if you have one? Would you recommend getting one? Thanks

Washer works fine after 14 years.

The dryer part now refuses to work half the time so you have to coax it in - hour slots and removing most items to just leave say one divert cover or one towel.

And even when it worked, on an a4 dry cycle things came out a bit damp/steamy.

I do miss my separate one a lot. £99 or so and I just stick vent out of flat window when in use. Just took up a lot of space.

Washer is fine, dryer has broken about 200 times. Appliance maintenance guy we had our said they’re often problematic and to not get another in the future.

This was my experience as well = washer fine, but drier gave up the ghost. I settled it by buyingm a drier and stacking it on the washer!

CrazyAndSagittarius · 09/11/2024 14:16

They are renowned for being more likely to go wrong and for not drying well. I used to have one but rarely used it as there was always another wash that needed to go on!

BoilingHotand50something · 09/11/2024 14:26

I have a washer dryer by choice. Used to have separates but would rather just one and more cupboard space. But I don’t really understand what people are drying all the time. I only tumble cotton underwear, socks, towels etc. Everything else dries quickly enough on an airer. Do people really tumble all clothes?

I had an LG for years. It needed a couple of repairs but on the washer part. Once it gave up the ghost, I bought a Bosch with no complaints.

They're shit IME.

No. For me it’s towels and bedding. I have a superking bed so the bedding is huge. I also change all the beds together (4 sets in total) so far too much too and for my bedding too big to put on an airer

coxesorangepippin · 09/11/2024 15:36

I've used two

Neither dried

BoilingHotand50something · 09/11/2024 15:39

@Aliflowers ahh that makes sense. I rarely do all the beds together, especially now I am a menopausal hot mess!

We all shower before bed and wear pjs, so wash bedding fortnightly. Have a spare set each. So no need to wash more than one set a week. The super long bedding is absolutely fine on a heated airer. Before we had the heated airer, the machine coped with the superking set absolutely fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ihaveausername · 09/11/2024 15:59

I have had one (or rather several) for over 35 years, Hotpoint, Bosch, AEG and now a NEFF. The AEG one was the best. Yes we have had one or two issues with them but when they last for 13 years you come to expect that. I usually only use the dryer for towels or in an emergency not for all of the washing. I know of friends who have had washing machines that they have scrapped after 3 years so you get what you pay for.

I wash bedding weekly (no judgement for anyone who differs to that), just part of my routine. I have a tall but small airer if that makes sense and the super-king bedding would be trailing on the ground. Don’t want anything bigger cos it sits neatly behind a door in kitchen out of view. The ideal is that it all goes on the washing line but in shitty weather I bung it all in the dryer. And it will take the bedding from all 4 beds and dry it perfectly. My old washer dryer would have struggled to dry a single sheet. And anyone else I’ve know to have one would say the same

@BoilingHotand50something i should take a leaf out if your book but it’s one of those jobs I’m want done and dusted in one go 🤣

I've had 2 in recent years (house move, no issue with machines). One AEG, one Samsung.

Both work fine. I've never had a stand alone dryer, so maybe they take longer than a dryer would, but things come out clean and dry so can't complain

DoctorAngelface · 09/11/2024 16:01

I've never had any problems with mine.

Growlybear83 · 09/11/2024 16:03

I've got a cheap Indesit washer dryer and it's been brilliant. I don't often use the dryer but when I do it works very well.

Overtheatlantic · 09/11/2024 16:04

Our Bosch has been great. Does the job for two of us.

HellofromJohnCraven · 09/11/2024 16:29

I had one. Main issue when I was in the thick of it with 3 dc was the time it took. The drying capacity was lower than the washer. Put a load in and by the time it was dryish and out the machine, half the day was gone! I bought a tumble dryer that lived in the garage. Now have seperate large capacity machines

Yeah mine is a cheap Indesit. It's very much fit for purpose. I got mine years ago second hand too and it's still ticking away fine.

HelenHywater · 09/11/2024 13:50

yeah it's a pain - the dryer doesn't work on a full load. Washing function is fine though. I do have a separate dryer but it's being a bit temperamental at the moment too. I wish I could afford a miele or similar.

I wish I could afford a miele or similar.

There is a Miele outlet centre that often has stonking deals. They don't hang around though, so you have to be quick.

Always had one due to space issues, never had a prob (except age) and it dries well. I tend to do all the washing I need to before drying so it's more efficient than wet/dry/wet/dry.

CallMeCrazyButIDontLikeStoreBoughtPesto · 09/11/2024 21:03

Mine is great. We had a hot point one that lasted for years and then a candy one that lasted for seconds. We gave up and got another hot point. We have a floofy dog so regularly emptying the filter (and DP can't seem to wash anything with pockets without at least one lighter in there) but it handles it.

Just know that they crease clothes to absolute fuck so hang it wet if it's that kind of item.

LemonViewer · 09/11/2024 21:52

Always had washer dryers due to space and necessity. Myself, DH and two young kids in a two bedroom flat so space is at a premium! Ours are fine and last years but they are not as powerful for drying. I do find you can't overlord them like a purpose dryer and they also take a long time if you put the clothes in soaking wet. I usually wash, hang up overnight and then finish off in the dryer in the morning and this system works very well with the washer-dryer
