We've thrown quite a bit out but there some items that i just want to replace.

Some of it we have lived with and some it just seems just should replace!

pillow, duvets and bedding, dinner service, glasses, bins, door mats, rugs, cushions and blankets - toilet brushes and washing up bowls!

it all so expensive!

Of your list literally only bought new door mats (left old ones behind) and toilet brushes (binned)! Why on earth would you replace the rest just because you moved house?

thedendrochronologist · 08/11/2024 20:21

This is what I am asking for.

Then have come to the end of their life but I am haven't replaced them due to cost or decision fatigue / metal load!

I replaced everything, sold my apartment went travelling bought all things new for new house. BUT I did sell a lot of the old stuff on eBay.

Autumnlife · 08/11/2024 21:34

Dining table old one had seen better days but was over 20 years old. New curtains were needed as ours didn’t fit along with curtain rails. Tea towels, door mat, new lamps and some new bedding as that again had seen better days.

We had lived in our old house for 23 years so replaced two double beds, bought mattresses for the singles and also replaced pillows and duvets. I think I bought new doormats and bog brushes but I don't see the logic in replacing China, glasses, washing up bowls, etc, although much that was chipped or unused and shoved at the back of a cupboard went in the big clear out.

mnahmnah · 08/11/2024 21:44

All new pans and crockery. Lots of chips in plates and bowls, the pans were past it. New start in a new house so bought nice new ones. Other than that, we just rid of a LOT of stuff after 16 years in the last house!

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 08/11/2024 22:22

My settee. It wouldn't fit through the front door and was too high up at the back to go over the garden gate without getting stuck on the edge of the garage roof. I had planned on buying a couple of new settees eventually. Just not that quick. The others were a wardrobe, cooker fridge and freezer because everything in my old place was either built in or integrated into cupboards.

Pumpkittenspice · 08/11/2024 22:43

We replaced our sofa (because our old one wouldn’t fit through the door), duvet, mattress topper and pillows. We only replaced them because our previous ones were old anyway - wouldn’t have bothered if they were newish.

Minikievs · 08/11/2024 23:15

New bed for me and DC1, DC2 had my old one (they had bunk beds in old house) and new bedding as all new beds are bigger
New sofa, old one was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever sat on in my life, I ordered it online without trying, never again
New fridge freezer (space for American style in new house)
New dining table & chairs (previous kitchen diner was a third of the size)
That's it
I kept all kitchenware, towels etc

DilemmaDelilah · 09/11/2024 09:21

Goodness! I didn't replace anything that didn't need replacing! All the rooms in the new house were redecorated so we did get a few new cushions, but we certainly didn't replace bedding or anything like that. As time has gone on things have been replaced but not just for the sake of it.

reluctantbrit · 09/11/2024 09:25

Doormats, toilet brush and curtains.

We moved after 4 years, 18 months and 8 years. Nothing was so unusable that it needed replacement.

We are now in our house 14 years, I am pretty sure I would replace several things if they aren't chugged out previously like chipped plates or foggy glasses.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/11/2024 09:27

We're mid-move and the only thing that's definitely being replaced is DD's bed, because she wants to upgrade to a double. Oh, and a new hoover, because our cordless's battery capacity has dimished to the point of uselessness. I'm going to get a nice basic corded one. But neither of those replacements are because we're moving, they were necessary anyway.

thedendrochronologist · 09/11/2024 20:06

Some of these replies- and the pearl clutching.

But I has made me realised that was don't really spend enough on household stuff because DH is massively tight and I'd end up footing the bill so I'm going splurge on new stuff and replace the awful grim stuff.

If your stuff is old and grim and you can afford it then absolutely replace it. But I'm not sure why you think the replies are pearl clutching to suggest it's not necessary to replace most of the items on your list for a house move. Ours were generally in good condition and will be replaced as and when needed. We did buy a fair few other bits as needed but moving house is so expensive - you did ask in OP what you "should" replace and mention it's so expensive.
