PayPal Scam...

I only wanted tickets to see the fireworks at our local village school in Kent!
Tickets all sold out, went on FB and some "mum" said she's selling tickets because change of plans. I thought "oh brilliant, saved the day!" Message this person, who I don't know, BUT thought I could trust as we live in a small village and who would know about the fireworks display unless they were a local... turns out she still has tickets and selling them at same price as the school. Great, another reason to trust this person... I'm not a big PayPal user, she said I can send the money via PP and she would email the tickets to me. I thought, great, PP is safe, let's do this.
Make the payment using their email address, different name but assumed it was husbands account. Next message back, "oh no, PP is holding the payment, they said you need to make another payment using a different email" which she then provided. "They will refund your first payment once the second payment has been sent". That's when I realised that this was a scam!
I said "no thanks, I'll just request my money back". To which she replies "oh hang on, I'll just send the tickets anyways".
Called my bank, they can't do anything about it, called PP, they can't do anything about it because the payment was made to a Friends or Family Member - specifically what the scammer asked me to do. Lesson learnt, lucky it was only £15 but very annoyed at myself and gutted my son can't go to the fireworks display!
Any similar PP or scamming stories! So awful you can't get your money back and the scammers just gets away with it! Targeting a parent. Disgusting 🤮

Targeting anyone is disgusting. Not sure why being a parent would make it any more so!

Sorry you were scammed. Good job it wasn't too much money though, and that you realised in time to be scammed further.

Targeting a parent?

Pust · 08/11/2024 13:41

There’s loads of scammers on fb groups, both locals and others just waiting for an opportunity.
in future never do friends and family to someone that obviously is neither, offer to meet in person and pay for something like this and obviously report them to the admin so they can be kicked out of the group and not scam anyone else

Yes, scamming anyone other than a parent is acceptable. Come on.

The point i was trying to highlight is I felt like I was in a secure place amongst other parents. Obviously scammers don't give a toss who they target.

My child doesn't go to the school yet, his friends do. Anyway, lesson learnt. Fancied a vent.

Thanks for feedback
