Help - visiting Edinburgh

You lovely people have helped me make travel / accommodation plans before, so I'm hoping you can help me again as my head is melted looking at all the options!

DD and I are going to Edinburgh the end of November, Thursday to Sunday - (getting in late Thursday night). We're visiting Queen Margaret's University on the Friday, and I have something on near Warriston Gardens on the Saturday (DD will probably go for a wander round Edinburgh that day).

I'm trying to find somewhere to stay that makes both those places, plus the city centre, reasonably accessible by public transport.

Any suggestions, or am I hoping for a unicorn?!

Hi @Trabbling would you like us to move your thread to our Scotsnet topic in case any locals have some suggestions for you?

That would be great, thanks @DawnMumsnet. I thought Chat would get more visibility, but that doesn't seem to be working out too well for me!! I 😅

Queen Margaret is less than 10 minutes on the train from Waverley station. Lots of buses too. Plenty of public transport heading there.

Warriston Gardens is just off Ferry Road and next to Botanic Gardens and Inverleith. Should be plenty of buses heading that way. Would checking the First bus site give you an idea of routes? Ferry Road is a pretty significant road and the hospital is further along it I think. Can even get off on Ferry Rd or at Botanics and walk the rest of the way.

All of your places are well served by public transport. You wont have any issues. I can't recommend any specific accomodations but just get anything Central and you will be fine.

If you stay somewhere within walking distance of Waverley then you'll also be near lots of buses. Haymarket and Edinburgh Park stations might trip you up if you're not from round here. Waverley is the station with a direct line to the university you mention.

We'll leave it here in Chat for now seeing as you've had some responses but hit the report button on the thread at any time if you'd like us to move it over.

Thanks @LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole and @Anisty - airbnb booked near Fountain Park, which gives us handy access to everywhere we need to go.

Edinburgh is a wonderful city!

But you do know queen Margaret uni isn't in Edinburgh don't you? It's 5 miles or so out of the city centre in East Lothian. It's not a true Edinburgh student experience if that's what your daughter is looking for, it feels really quite remote and separate from the city itself.

Thanks @Invisimamma - I knew it was a bit out alright, but I'll mention it to her too.

You don't have to live out there though. There are private student halls nearer the city centre which have a mix of uni students, sometimes the unis offer an allocation through their own accommodation office. Under 23s can get free bus travel via Young Scot Card.
