Can I install an electric car charger in a detached garage if there is a fuse board in there?

Does anyone know? Our garage is some way from the house. The electricity meter is in the back of the house nowhere near the driveway. There is a patio in between which we don't want to take up.

The detached garage has a fuse board in it though (probably not the correct term but the box with the flippy up and down switches). There is one in the house and a smaller one in the garage. Does anyone know whether this means we could put an EV charger in or on the side of the garage?

Thank you!

If there is power in the garage you should be able to have a charger.

Are there lights and sockets in there?

My EV charger is connected to my actual electric meter not the fuse board X

When we were getting our ev charger part of getting quotes was sending off photos of our fuse board. I'd say just contact companies with photos of what you have on your garage and ask if it will work.

We do have lights and sockets in there as well as the separate fuse board. Ive read that they connect directly into the electricity meter which for us is a pain since it is at the back of the house and on the wrong side of the house so it is about 45m from the garage/driveway

It will depend on the cable feeding that fuze box. If it has been done properly then the cable should be a sufficient amp rating if done say using 15 amp cable then no. It will need assessing by the team doing the install. If you have the certification then it should have the cable size on it.

That’s exactly our set up. We needed to upgrade the fuse box in the garage first, but yes it can be done.

Just had one installed this week. Depends on the consumer unit (fuse board) and whether it has capacity for the charger, but if it doesn’t presumably it can be upgraded. Ours is connected with cabling to the consumer unit, some cabling needs to be upgraded in the meter box (by the supplier) but it’s not connected to the meter as such. It may depend also on the type of charger you choose.

Just out of interest, how much does it cost to get these installed?

BuzzieLittleBee · 08/11/2024 08:45

Ours isn't connected to the meter, but it needed its own slot in the consumer unit (which happens to be in the garage).

Is it an old fashioned fuse box with wires, or do you just flick a switch if something trips? And is there a space on it for something new?

Looking like between £900 - £1400ish depending on complexity of the property

It's a modern one with flick switches which was only added two years ago (new garage). We did make the point at the time of building that we wanted to be able to put in ev charger so Im hoping it is ok
