How long to stay home after norovirus / stomach bug

llamalines · 07/11/2024 12:18

We've all had a stomach bug. One by one, not all at once, it wasn't food poisoning.

DD's friend has just invited her for a sleepover tomorrow. She seems better today and last puked yesterday morning. She wants to go.

Would you accept or postpone?

48 hrs after last D&V episode.
No don't send her - you'll infect another household

Crunchymum · 07/11/2024 13:24

Technically your DD will be post 48h if she had her last episode yesterday morning and sleepover is tomorrow night.

However if it's taken your household out, I'd decline. Better to postpone than make another household ill.

Iloveagoodnap · 07/11/2024 13:37

If the whole house is better now then I think tomorrow would be fine as it's more than 48h since your daughter was sick. But if the bug is still 'active' among other members of the household I think I'd be worried it might be passed on so would suggest another date.

The 48 hours is a minimum, norovirus can stay in the faeces for 2 weeks. Obviously you have to go back to school and things like that but for a sleepover I wouldn’t risk it.

Do the parents know that your DD (and your household) has been so poorly? I wouldn't be impressed at my DD inviting a friend for a sleepover then finding out everyone has had norovirus. I wouldn't let your DD risk it, OP. hope you're all feeling better now, sounds a rough couple of weeks.

mindutopia · 07/11/2024 14:00

I would say no. She needs to rest and recover, not stay up late eating chocolate. I would explain that you have all been ill with a noro like bug and ask if you can rearrange for another time. I can’t imagine anyone wants the risk of bringing it into their home because of a sleepover.

This.

Too soon.

Id tell the parents and let them make the decision. D will technically be fine but I'd let them decide.

Agreed.

She may seem better but it seems very unlikely she's fully over it given she last threw up only yesterday and the rest of the house is still unwell. I would talk to the parent and say you've all been unwell and rearrange for another time.

MovingCrib · 07/11/2024 14:29

I'd postpone. I don't think I'd leave it up to the other family to decide as that puts them in an awkward position.

Whitewolf2 · 07/11/2024 14:56

No I’d let them know and say it’s too soon - the kids will be in close contact, probably sharing food etc so it would be easy to accidentally pass it on.
