Cervical ectropian in peri menopause?

Just been for a smear and told I have this but all info points to if effecting young women and women on the pill. I’ve never been on the pill and I’m 48. Has anyone had this at a similar age? I’m panicking it’s something else. Also been bleeding since the smear an hour ago

Thank you. The nurse never mentioned any further action either which concerned me. She seems to think of the smear is clear that’s the end of it. Can I ask how old you are please?

Also I’m glad you have managed to go private and be seen sooner. A 12 month wait is ridiculous if you have symptoms. Bleeding after sex is probably your ectropian but you need to be properly checked just to make sure x

To be fair when I first went they gave me a scan of my uterus and then that was clear so they didn't follow up but when I had the bleeding after sex I went straight back. & my GP had a look at my cervix & saw the ectropian. I've had spotting on & off for a while but whenever I've mentioned it they haven't been concerned. It does make sense it's the ectropian causing it. I'm 45, I've had 2 kids, been on the pill & currently have the mirena coil so lots of variables. I think the ectropian is more of a 'wear & tear' type thing. When I see the private consultant I'm going to ask for a smear to be done just for reassurance too.

Thank you! Everything I’ve read said it’s common in young women and women using contraception which isn’t me! I’m so angry at myself as I haven’t had a smear for 15 years and know if it’s cancer it will totally be my own fault!

I think they changed the way they do smears now anyway, they don’t actually check for cancer cells just HPV which causes cancer. Since you only get HPV through sexual intercourse,I’m not sure what that means for asexuals and celibate people that are still genetically pre - disposed to cervical cancer.

I agree it seems pointless to go for a smear now if you don’t have hpv

@neveradullmoment99 thank you so much can I ask how old you are and if you were on contraception? Sorry please don’t feel the need to answer if You would rather not x

I'm 57. I was on the pill but over 18 years plus ago! So I don't think it was that. Honestly, I was like you when I looked it up. My smear also came back clear after leaving it for years x

neveradullmoment99 · 11/11/2024 18:02

The European can make you bleed more. I'm sure I did.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/11/2024 18:02

But a negative result for HPV at your smear doesn't mean you're not carrying the virus. It lies dormant and can flare up.
And a smear gives a HCP the opportunity to inspect your cervix visually. Many asymptomatic polyps which can become cancerous are picked up this way and referred on for removal.

I had have had a cervical ectropian before, I was 33 and was on the pill for 7 years.

It is hormonal and the dr explained that it was the inner skin of the cervix now appearing slightly on the middle outer of the cervix and isn't a cause for concern.

Like you I was super worried and also came off pill to try and conceive. I bled only once or twice but it fixed itself which because it is hormonal makes sense.

Hope that's some reassurance.

Thanks so much everyone who has replied. You have helped my anxiety a great deal! Now to wait for the results. I will update if anyone is interested in what my smear says. Also please go for regular smears honestly the anxiety and the guilt of something was found which could have been treated earlier is really not worth it! If you really can’t go for a smear please at least do a home hpv test to make sure you are clear xx

I was told I had cervical ectropian when I was 41. Apparently it's really common in women who have had children .

The nurse said it used to be referred to as eroded cervix, and people wrongly believed the cervix had been worn away , due to having children.

In reality, it is cells that are meant to grow internally are growing on the external areas and these cells are less hardy , which can lead to bleeding.

I have been on the pill.

Newshoos · 23/11/2024 18:48

Thought I would update as I get frustrated when other people don’t 😂. Received my results. Negative for hpv. So relieved as I hadn’t had a smear in so long and was convinced I would have awful results as a punishment! Please get your smears ladies even if it’s very very overdue. The peace of mind is with it and if anything is found the sooner it’s dealt with the better.

I’m 53 and was told I had this 2 years ago. A significant one. I also have HPV and have had treatment on removing pre-cancerous cells since age 21. I have had smear tests very regularly as a result but this was the first time ectropian was mentioned and as you say can present visually as cancer. I was referred to clinic and checked over thoroughly. No action required. Hope that sets your mind at rest.

Hello, I know this is an old message but I wonder if you could share what happened in your referral? Going through as similar thing right now.
