Wheat free options

Letitgoe · 06/11/2024 22:37

Recently been diagnosed with a wheat allergy after years of issues. Woooo

I downloaded an app for restaurants and found some great alternatives for home.

What do people do when they running late and need to grab a sandwich. Costa and places there are no options. I’m after some suggestions when your catching a train or plane…..what do you eat that’s wheat free? Or will just have to accept I need to be better prepared? The airport recently was rubbish for options.

It is a pain.
Salads or rice/potato based meals from food to go sections. Jacket spuds.
Or pack a gluten free sandwich

EducatingArti · 06/11/2024 22:48

I tend to take a packet of oat cakes out with me.

aveenobambino · 06/11/2024 22:49

Checking packets v carefully sushi is occasionally ok if you don't eat the soy sauce and it's plain sushi. I eat mochi too at sushi takeaway places eg Itsu.

Leon is a dream! So many options on the go and very safe.

M&S do gf sandwiches. They're ok. There's also bits like dips and crisps, peanut butter with apple slices, etc

Supermarkets will have ready meals suitable for you.

Service stations I check there's a Leon before stopping but Waitrose/m&s' will have something

Airports etc I pre pack but there's always some crisps/fruit/chips /something you will find. I'd never turn up w nothing though. At a push McDonald's chips and a McFlurry have bailed me out before

Pret is poor (and has a poor track record w allergies- see poor Natasha Ednan-Laperouse) so I avoid. Pizza express, dominos, Zizzi's and Bills are all excellent.

I'm coeliac so I feel your pain. It's much better in Italy/soain/portugal!

EwwSprouts · 06/11/2024 22:57

M&S salads, the little ones with grains. They also do a couple of GF wraps that are ok.
Hummus, carrot sticks & GF tortilla chips.
Ham wrapped cheese eg parma ham round manchego.
Nuts are filling.

KeepingGoingOneDayAtATime · 06/11/2024 23:00

The supermarkets all have sandwiches in their meal deal section, and some sell the sandwich fillings in small pots so you can buy bread and make the same sandwiches with just your own preferred bread from their bread section.

You can also just buy ham or cheese and make a sandwich.

We're working hard on this at the moment and it's a bit complicated because eating the same one sandwich every day forever is a bit tedious.

I wouldn't trust Pret with any dietary requirements.

I also have a wheat allergy. Resources for people with coeliac disease are super helpful.

Supermarket GF sandwiches are mostly ok, some are very good.

M&S have various options in their made without wheat range that are handy for lunches that aren't sandwiches (sausage rolls, cheese and onion rolls, samosas, spring rolls, ready to eat cocktail sausages).

Moonshine5 · 06/11/2024 23:20

Sushi (itsu will make your spec)
Chicken/Halloumi and Salad
M&S Salads (obvs not pasta or soy)
Sainsbury's have a chilled section for gf

Lots of options, in fact I know many people who opt for GF so they don't feel bloated

Moonshine5 · 06/11/2024 23:24

I got doughnuts from Sainsbury's freezer section

Waitrose pasta selection are better than most imho

And the supermarket Xmas selections are wide ranging - I think Schar products are brilliant and their chocolate cookies are unbeatable.

Letitgoe · 07/11/2024 11:07

Amazing suggestions here! I’m yet to find a wheat / gluten free sandwich so I will hunt those out in M&S.

Leon never heard of them so I will have a google now.

M&S has a couple of good options and is the best supermarket / place that does food on the go. Also has GF sausage rolls in the fridge, and things like hot cross buns, iced buns etc.

Sushi has been mentioned a couple of times. Be VERY careful. Most sushi contains gluten (not just in the soy sauce) - it's super annoying. M&S does ONE sushi pack that's GF (as long as you don't use the soy sauce) but this version sells out quickly. All the others have wheat in the actual sushi, why is anyone's guess.

Salads can also be a go-to if you're on the go, but again always check the packaging.

Annoyingly, a lot of things you'd think would be GF actually aren't, when you look at the ingredients.

Went through Manchester Airport recently and WH Smiths had a couple of GF salads and a rice noodle pot. There was also a GF cooked breakfast in one of the restaurants. This was new, as in June the same airport had precisely nothing to eat without wheat, save for chocolate bars, crisps etc. Which is not a meal!! So hopefully things are getting better.

I'm coeliac, btw.

Borntorunfast · 07/11/2024 11:22

Second Leon - really good! Just not many of them near me :(

Floralnomad · 07/11/2024 11:24

Waitrose also do gf a gf sandwich

Seeline · 07/11/2024 11:27

Most of the supermarkets/Boots/W H Smiths etc do GF sandwiches. The range is limited, and for smaller outlets like service stations or airports, there may not be a choice, but there is usually one.
