To point out it's not our election?

There are far more threads on the US election result than there were about our own elections, even. The BBC Radio Four coverage was excessive in the run-up; the whole thing has got out of hand now. I see there's a thread on could you be with a man who voted for Trump, now. I'm sure we didn't get into so much depth for Starmer and Sunak.

Unfortunately a lot of our corporations have US owners, investors or interests so our whole working experience/lives is affected by what happens in America. It pays to watch what happens over there as it usually ends up affecting us all one way or another.

You know the old saying, "America sneezes, the world catches cold". It doesn't just apply to finance.

True. But US politics will very likely have a big effect on our economy and European defence so naturally the US election is treated differently to say the Japanese election. Plus many just can’t fathom why so many people voted for Trump so there’s the curiosity factor.

It's going to affect us a lot even though we didn't get a vote.

Since the Second World War the US has basically guaranteed our security.

We have a small and underfunded armed forces with no real air defence and a dictator, Putin who considers us an enemy (he has used radioactive weapons and chemical weapons on British soil) and is currently invading Ukraine. He has made it clear from interviews etc how he feels about the baltic states and Poland.

We left the EU and are no longer part of a big trading block.

Trump is an admirer of Putin and his new BFF Musk has been having meetings with him. He is very transactional, has no sense of loyalty to Britain or to amy other US allies apart from Israel. He wants to put tariffs on goods and probably start a trade war.

I think it's quite significant.

Yes and no. I said to DP last night "we'll have a new president when we wake up" and royally got the piss taken out of me. He said "we won't". He's right of course but it really will affect us all.
