Tips for getting 5 year old to wear his new glasses

My 5 year old has just been prescribed glasses for full time wear. He was excited at first but the novelty wore off after 10 minutes and now he hates them. Obviously have explained he needs to wear them and the reasons but does anyone have any tips or is it just a matter of time getting used to them?

Our optician has said his eyesight could improve with full time wear, has anyone got any experience of this?

I'd empathise with him along the lines of " I know they take a bit of getting used to and I understand you don't like wearing them, but the optician says you have to wear them every day for your eyes to be healthy." I'd be firmly but gently insistent like you would be about tooth brushing. Then I'd offer a sticker for each full day he wears them without a fuss and a reward at the end of the week.Kee going with this until he is wearing them automatically.

Find famous people /any superhero specs wearers?...

Make sure they’re comfy…I’ve been wearing glasses for about 25 years and I absolutely loathe the obligatory new glasses phase cause they never seem to be comfy straight away. I don’t have an option - I can’t see well enough to do anything without them on but I hate the time it takes to get them fitting perfectly.

Make it a game. Let’s put on our glasses today and see can we find X item, colour X, count the clouds, etc etc etc.

Then talk about it before bed and say thank you glasses for helping me find everything.

Yes, if he has a lazy eye(s) the glasses will help him read more letters on the chart with his glasses on.
I find sticker charts work the best.

I agree with this one, and the reward stickers etc.

I'd find it hard to come down too strict, as in my younger years, having to wear glasses felt like the ultimate shame.

It's horrible to live in a world that's so image conscious, and thank heavens for cartoon characters, and pop stars or film hero's that wear them.

Do you remember the films where the dowdy little secretary, that wore glasses was laughed at and passed over for promotions etc?

THEN when she took said glasses off, and her previously tied up hair happened to suddenly fall loose... the boss said "Why Miss Jones, you are so beautiful".

It's crap like this that helps makes people self critical and no self esteem.

My son started wearing glasses at the same age, very first morning a work colleague/friend of my father called in before work (we lived with my parents) and made a huge fuss of how the glasses suited him, how grown up he looked, how it will be like magic seeing better etc etc, my son always liked this man (who hadn't been coached to say anything) and he went off to school absolutely delighted with himself, the school bus driver also commented positively about the glasses, he never had an issue wearing them from then on and after having surgery aged 21 he actually missed wearing them.
