Do you screw your fire /carbon monoxide alarm to the wall at the top of the landing or is there a less unsightly alternative?

Just curious what others do?
We have two fire alarms and one carbon monoxide alarm screwed to the wall but I think they look a bit unsightly.
Does anyone have any alternative solutions?

Thanks

I'd rather have them on the landing to cover all the bedrooms and the stairs.
There's no furniture in the landing area to put them on

I've always had them on the ceiling.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/11/2024 18:45

There's only the ceiling as an alternative - anything else means a greater likelihood of dying due to the smoke/CO not being detected quickly enough.

Myattention · 05/11/2024 18:46

Ours are mains connected on the ceilings. You forget they are there.

Iloveeverycat · 05/11/2024 18:52

Carbon monoxide detector should be in the kitchen. Just put high on the wall up near the ceiling you won't notice it.

Ceiling. They blend in and it's most effective as smoke rises and spreads along the ceiling.

Generally they should be at head height.

In order for your carbon monoxide alarm to work correctly, it is essential you put it in the right place. Here are the things you need to consider when placing a carbon monoxide detector:

  • You should ideally have a carbon monoxide detector on each floor of your house and definitely in the same room as any fuel-burning appliance, such as a boiler, stove or oven.
  • Place the alarm at head height. This could be on a shelf or bookcase; it doesn’t have to be fixed on a wall. Ideally, it should be
  • At least 300 mm from any wall (for ceiling mounted alarms)
  • At least 150 mm from the ceiling, above the height of any door or openable window (for wall mounted alarms)
  • Make sure the alarm is between 1 and 3 m (measured horizontally) from the potential source of CO, such as boilers and ovens.
  • Some carbon monoxide alarms are built into ceiling-mounted multipurpose fire alarms. You should check your smoke detector to see whether it is already fitted with a carbon monoxide detector. If the alarm is located on the ceiling, it should be at least 300 mm from any wall and any ceiling obstruction e.g. light fittings.

Definitely safety over style here. Being burned/suffocated to death isn't worth it. You can get a fire safety assessment from your local fire station, they can advise where best to place them.

Iloveeverycat · 05/11/2024 18:56

You should have 2 smoke alarms one down stairs on the ceiling and one on the landing ceiling.

Ours are mains wired into the smoke alarms

MillMiller · 05/11/2024 19:04

We do have a fire alarm wired to the mains but not the carbon monoxide.

Ours is on the ceiling. It doesn’t look amazing, but it’s better than carbon monoxide poisoning.

DanielaDressen · 05/11/2024 19:33

I think carbon monoxide is a bit heavy which is why wall mounted rather than ceiling is recommended. Wheras smoke rises.

Caswallonthefox · 05/11/2024 19:57

Mine is stuck on the stairs wall next to a smoke alarm.
My boiler is at the bottom of the stairs, next to my front door, which is draughty anyway. But as I private rent the landlord had to put it somewhere.

Shouldn't it be near the boiler?

BobnLen · 05/11/2024 20:50

Our carbon monoxide detector is in the box room on the wall as the boiler is in there, we have no other gas appliances. Our Smoke detector is on the landing wall but we have smoke detectors in all the other rooms as well

It's very slightly lighter than air.

Use command strips to put it in the right place but also easy to remove and replace?
