Pregnant and possible food poisoning

Sorry for the TMI but I’ve been having strong diarrhoea for the past two hours and feel very sick (not yet been sick) at 27 weeks pregnant. I’m really concerned I’ve got food poisoning from some food I ate on Saturday (think sausages I didn’t realise hadn’t been properly cooked until it was too late), how worried should I be and is there anything I can do?

Not necessarily. I had food poisoning recently from something I ate on Wed night and the symptoms didn't start until Sat night

Thank you that’s reassuring. It could be a bug I suppose or I keep reading stories about it possibly being the start of labour which would not be good! I’m not having contractions though just sharp cramping before a bout.

Go to the hospital asap. I had the same. I got there later than the dr was hoping for but all was ok at the end!!

Rainbow24x · 05/11/2024 00:12

I had a gastro bug when pregnant and they were not concerned just advised me to rest and stay hydrated

Jamie25 · 05/11/2024 00:18

As a father I’d say see how you feel in the morning. Baby won’t suffer malnutrition overnight. But if you feel concerned, just ring 111. Wish I was a doctor but that’s the best advice I can give. Don’t listen to google.

Jay185 · 05/11/2024 00:24

I had this at around 20 weeks and was just told to stay hydrated and rest. I was in bed for one day and most of the next day. I took a stool sample to the Dr's but nothing came off of it and everything was fine. Call your gp to arrange for a stool sample just in case it might be anything that needs treating, it probably and hopefully won't be but just to be on the safe side.

Not true

You can have delayed symptoms of about a week

It happens. It won’t hurt your baby unless it’s something more serious. That’s rare. Like I said if you feel like your baby is in danger call 111. If it feels routine and everyday life just endure unless it becomes a bit ‘too much’

Letitbe24 · 05/11/2024 00:46

I can feel baby kicking away so it seems they’re fine, it’s uncomfortable but not crippling bad, you just hear absolute horror stories about food poisoning causing miscarriage so thank you for the reassurance :)

You never really know where or when you got food poisoning. I got symptoms, very very clear ones, 18hours after eating undercooked chicken.

But I'll never know if that one mouthful I took caused it. I suspect it did, but as I was in another country when I had that chicken, I don't actually know.

Whatever may have caused your stomach problem you do what you feel you must.. But the chances are, baby will be ok.

Abroad the food can sometimes be questionable. The main thing is really if he/she is kicking, and following the usual routine, should be alright. Like me and you say, if a mother feels something is off, it’s best to get checked out

I agree with posters who say food poisoning can come on a lot later, Had it in Turkey 36 hours after eating the offending item (did not vomit, but diahorrea and actually just lost two days with wracking pain and flu symptoms), and my daughter who ate the same thing came down with it as I was sort of just getting out of the worst, so a good 72 hours on. All you can do is drink water and be rested, and baby will probs be fine too. This isn't probably what you want to hear, but the same daughter came screaming into this world after I had tummy ache, and similar troubles 26 years ago. Really thought it was something I had eaten and never went the hospital until too late. It wasn't my first rodeo either (her brother was 13 months old). "well it is a different sort of pain" and "it won't be that, I'd know if it was that" until all of a sudden it was that. All was well in the end, but I wish I had read the signs a bit better. hoping for good news for you soon, xx

buffyspikefaith · 05/11/2024 01:01

The most common cause of food poisoning is campylobacter and that's usually onset of 2-5 days but can be longer or shorter
I know way more about it than I wanted to after 11 days with it and a hospital trip!

Atishooo · 05/11/2024 10:16

I had food poisoning twice when pregnant, everything was fine. I just felt very sorry for myself, rested and tried not to dehydrate.
