Michael Jackson - trick or treat?

How do you feel when Michael Jackson’s music is played on the radio following the recent documentary where two individuals accused him of serious child abuse?

Though he was never convicted, the stories told in great detail were compelling. It’s hard to imagine these as fake. As far as I’m aware these individuals were not trying to blackmail his estate, and while they may have hoped for financial compensation (and got some?), the public exposure is high risk and an emotionally heavily price to pay.

Since, whenever I hear his music I have to turn off the radio or switch station. I can’t shake off these stories which may also apply to so many others suffered pain and trauma under his hands and his creepy ‘generosity’ freak show.

I haven't seen the documentary but it's impossible to ban his music. There are plenty of recording artists with very dubious pasts, that are still played.

pinkpantherxxx · 04/11/2024 23:21

I have watched this too

Whatthebarnacles · 04/11/2024 23:22

I love his music. I think nothing of the stories (whilst listening), I just enjoy the talent.

*Edited to add (whilst listening)

Keroppi · 04/11/2024 23:24

Don't care, love some of his music. I def do believe he groomed/abused children but it's been a while since I've watched documentaries or read the evidence

Lots of artists have created enjoyable songs and have done horrible things. I still listen to R Kelly, Chris Brown, Marilyn Manson etc

bettysyourauntie · 04/11/2024 23:28

I'm not saying apply a ban because clearly there was no trial or verdict, but just questioning if sensible people are not being put off by the thought that they may be enjoying and celebrating the music created by a serial paedophile?

So you don't care? Even if it is true? The music you are so enjoying was 'inspired' and fuelled by pain.

As the documentary was completed one sided with no counter arguments and multiple points in the documentary later proved as fake, I have no intention of banning his music at all.

Safechuck (one of the accusers) claims to have been molested at the train station at Nederland which was built two year after he claimed the abuse stopped and he last saw michael!

He also said he was called upon to give evidence as was wade. Now really, would michael Jackson and his attorney risk putting someone the stand he abused? Don't be ridiculous. The whole thing is a scam, and I will continue to listen to his legendary music until facts are proven (or at least not easily disproven)

How can you be so sure?
Many women are not believed when claiming they have been raped. Would you not even doubt he did it - a bit??

@bettysyourauntie I be just explained, multiple contradictions in the documentary that everyone so blindly watched and believed. I'm not saying he didn't do it because I have a gut feeling! Lots of what they both said were proven lies / I'd suggest you watch Square one which debunks many of their accusations.

There's definitely a possibility he did inappropriate things for sure. But I don't believe these two for a second.

I’m not sure what ultimate impact refusing to listen to his music would have. He’s dead, thus royalties and proceeds from his music are the property of his children/estate, who weren’t complicit in anything he may have done. People listening to music they like are enjoying music they like for what it is, not celebrating paedophilia.

I'm curious if the music provoke feelings of disgust and guilt that this man who momentarily delivers joy through his song caused so much pain and trauma. As much as I love his music I can not separate the two and prefer not to listen for the benefit of the doubt he is guilty. This is my personal choice and I'm voting with my feet. not starting a global campaign to ban his music because obviously this would be impossible.

The two things are completed separate. I wouldn't support a "ban" on his music even if he had been convicted. Where do you draw the line. Loads of artists and musicians have done horrible things, People are very complex and usually a mix of your and bad traits and things they've done. I don't think you should delete or ban everything someone has done just because they've committed a crime, however bad.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 05/11/2024 00:21

His accusers had their day in court. They blew it because of the greed of their families. And yes whilst it is sad that as mature adults they never got before a court, i will continue to enjoy the music of Michael Jackson.
I don't think we will ever see another talent like him.

I cannot look at a picture of him without feeling completely ill. I find it totally unacceptable that the BBC have used a photo of him with Quincy Jones on the front page. Unnecessary.

TheM55 · 05/11/2024 01:36

Turn it off then. For those that want to listen to it and believe something different was going on, leave it on. Unless you and your friends are going to a disco where MJ is a particular feature for the night, and it is going to split the ranks, then it should not really bother you any longer. There are far worse things to be bothered about in history to make you uncomfortable, and listening to Thriller should not be it. Sorry to be so blunt - but it is the way you make me feel 🙄😄. Okay, sorry, I will get my coat 😂

HannibalLecture · 05/11/2024 02:25

Do you think Michael Jackson was guilty? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/5073355-do-you-think-michael-jackson-was-guilty

Interesting thread.

bettysyourauntie · 05/11/2024 06:49

@HannibalLecture that's very interesting.

I didn't see this before but it's pretty clear (if we take this pole as a sample) that more people think he is guilty than not.

For the MJ defenders on here, I don't mind if you strongly believe he is not guilty, but some of you saying that despite thinking he is guilty or have a strong suspicion that he is, you are still content to continue enjoying his music and don't really care what happened. This is rather shocking.

Jimmy Savile comes to mind. Do you think the BBC or any media outlet for that matter should continue to show any of his content? Can you imagine the public outcry if a nostalgic Jimmy Savile episodes were played on TV - over Christmas say - for laughs? No one would laugh I promise you, or say, 'meh, he was special anyway and we want to get on with our entertainment!'

There was a trial, and there was a vedict.

Would you listen to Gary Glitter, or hum Jim’ll Fix it For Yoooou?

bettysyourauntie · 05/11/2024 06:58

And Huw Edwards Is he 'special' also? Very talented TV presenter.

Oh, and Mohamed Al-Fayad... Hats off for doing such great job at Harrods!

I try to separate his music from the man.
Though it does amuse me that people are completely convinced he is guilty, despite being found not guilty in a trial… yet the Lucy Letby threads are full of people who think she can’t possibly be innocent because the jury found her guilty.

Humans are strange.
