What will help calm an IBS flare quickly ?

Ibsflare · 04/11/2024 23:11

Something has triggered my IBS no ifea what as I eat the exact same things daily to manage it :
-GF porridge with oat milk with a banana and cup of tea
-apple mid morning and peppermint tea
-GF sandwich (chicken and mashed avocado)
-peppermint tea
-GF pasta (plain) with either a plain chicken breast or white fish

Sometimes I have GF digestive biscuits too for an evening snack. I literally haven’t changed a thing in months. I’m having the worst flare up and I’m so much pain. Hugely bloated , tmi but passing a lot of mucous as well. Is there anything I can take as only been told peppermint tea to help but it’s not helping 😭😭😭

I’ve been dairy and gluten free for 4 years

Do you have any buscopan? I find it does help with with the pain.

No but I can get some in the morning so will try that as I’m just in so much pain . The gp has always been so unhelpful me recommended just peppermint tea but no amount of that is helping

I'm not IBS diagnosed- but I was having really bad issues with my stomach especially diarrhea which I would have at 7am every morning like clockwork. I was thinking it was a gluten or dairy intolerance but rather than cutting anything out, I started taking Yakult and wow it began to work so well within 48 hrs! I'm unsure if it contains dairy itself though so maybe it wouldn't be suitable for you, but if it's just lactose you are sensitive too I would suggest taking those enzymes you take before eat lactose, and then try and Yakult!

All the best
xx

Sometimes an apple can trigger me if it's a bit too overripe - I have one for my lunch every day too and often it doesn't agree with me (but I love them so can't stop 🤦‍♀️).

Buscopan is definitely the answer, I never go anywhere without it. You can get it on amazon prime if that's any help.

Yes maybe it’s some slight variation in the fruit perhaps ? Whatever it is it’s awful 😞 j will definitely try the buscopan

I will check and see if I can find some kind of dairy free substitute if not . I’ve wondered about trying some kind of probiotic type thing before but i get nervous making any changes but maybe it’s worth a try

Sometimes i need to eat nothing, drink only warm water and take a laxative for a day then that clears it out and i start again with food but slowly with safe foods first like boiled carrots/ potatoes etc.

Antiperspirant · 04/11/2024 23:33

I'm currently lying in bed unable to sleep with the worst IBS bloat and pains so will be trying that myself.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 04/11/2024 23:47

You probably know this already but oat milk has gluten in it. It’s dairy free but not gluten free… maybe that’s causing the problem?

CrazyAndSagittarius · 05/11/2024 00:24

Peppermint tea and hot water bottle for the pain and bloating.

Don't have peppermint tea if you have indigestion as it will make it worse as mint relaxes the oesophagus.

Windeze is also good for dissipating the gas but it does take a little while (a few hours or so) to work ime.

Have you tried the low FODMAP elimination diet? I've more or less completely cured my debilitating IBS with it. You are on a very limited diet which is not a good idea for your gut microbiome over time. Low FODMAP is also very strict, but you are only support to be on it for a 2-6 weeks until symptoms subside and then while reintroducing to find your triggers.

I have IBS and a gluten intolerance and find that GF foods can trigger a terrible flare up so I now steer clear.

Buscopan or Colofac. Both available OTC.

As others have noted, sometimes cutting out gluten and dairy helps. Also:

I was also told peppermint tea helped and began drinking it regularly. It turns out that peppermint was responsible and once I stopped, the pain subsided.

For me, I can have most things in isolation but they don’t do well in combination with each other.

RedRobinGoesBobbing · 05/11/2024 05:50

Also, carbs are a big no for me unless I am eating them much earlier in the day and let gravity help the digestion.

Out of all the over the counter treatments, I have found Colpermin the most effective for my IBS. It works fast too.

YourWinter · 05/11/2024 11:06

I’m a week into low-FODMAP and it’s hugely improved. Apples (and pears) and avocado (and ALL stone fruit) are known triggers and not recommended.

This is helpful:

Pure aloe vera juice (a shot glass mixed with some juice or neat if you don't mind the taste) 3 times a day really, really, noticeably helps me. It's not a cure but it really is supportive for me personally. I'm about to start a turmeric regimen to see if the hype is true. I'll start with yogi tea and take it from there, although, curcumin supplements are meant to be the best.
