Odd question - does everyone do this?

I have always had moments where I feel the need to be completely still and not move a muscle. Sometimes in my whole body, sometimes just my hands or feet. I dont want to turn my head. I dont want to wriggle my fingers. I dont want to speak, I dont want anything to touch me or move against me, not even the breeze (especially not the breeze). My body just needs to be still - I think because when it is still I can't feel anything, my clothes dont brush against me etc. It's peaceful. Usually only lasts a few minutes, doesn't happen every day, has never really been noticed by other people and isn't something I have given much thought to before.

The reason I ask is that 8yo DD has started saying the same thing. If she is stitting still and I ask her to do something that requires moving, she will say 'in a few minutes, my hand isn't ready to move yet'. She just wants to hold her hand in a completely frozen position, sometimes a fist, sometimes flat with fingers out. Sometimes it's her whole body.
It's not the same as wanting to sit and watch telly for a bit longer or have a rest, it's a specific feeling of total stillness. She isn't doing it to avoid doing what she is asked as she will get on with it after a few moments.
It's just made me wonder is this something everyone does but generally doesn't speak about (I can't think of a reason why anyone would need to mention it, dont think I ever have until now)
Or is it just us?

I would love this but I have tinnitus and even silence isn’t something I have experienced now in years.

Urgh same here. I absolutely hate it, and I don't even know what brought it on because I've always been careful with earphones and things. I think it began first year after my first baby when I think about it...he was a true screamer, so nothing would surprise me. 🥴

My brother has it, too, and likes that ASMR thing to distract him. Drives me bonkers though, so I have to use white noise/rain sounds/radio.

No, I've never had this. Interesting.

I didn’t have noisy babies ( even the twins ). Never went to nightclubs. Not a big music fan at all and never have been. Never used earphones or headphones except on a plane.
Never had a noisy life so I don’t think it’s down to that.

Because I like silence the idea of trying to drown it out would, I think, drive me even crazier. It’s just more noise.
I’m writing this with a high pitched sound all around me and tomorrow I’ll stand at my front door in the countryside with the same high pitched noise drowning out the birds…..

I might try ASMR, I’ve never heard of it till your post. So 🙏 for mentioning it.

It's weird, isn't it, how it can just...appear? My brother has lived a quieter life than me, and I remember him just waking up one day and being so confused. It never went away, so I wonder if there's a genetic component.

I do agree...I think I've trained myself now to hear the thing I'm listening to, but it still takes effort and I get irritated at myself. I miss going to the woods and hearing nothing in those little moments of quiet.

ASMR is really popular, I've never found anything I can get on with (yet! I still try sometimes), but my brother says the LoFi stuff is best and less in your face. I think some of the bigger accounts on YouTube are a bit flashy which is distracting. I hope it helps! The Shipping Forecast is my current go to when the whistling gets too much. It's all on Spotify which is helpful!

I get this. It feels like I’m in a trance when it happens, really calm. It only lasts for a minute or two.

Me, too. I do it several times a day, I think. I've always thought of it as meditation.

I've got tinnitus these days, which is annoying as it can't be a perfect 'nothing' any more!

Haha! Tinnitus Gang! <sob> 😆

I've always had what's now known as "maladaptive daydreaming"; which is basically just intense daydreaming, which is excellent for me as I'm a writer. But! Now I've got this bloody ringing in my ears it's so distracting, I can't even slide into my little calm space anymore without putting some sort of noise in the background!

Intense daydreamer here too 🤣

My main daydream these days is to be Hermoine Granger with a spell to blast away the tinnitus……and do the diy 😁

You can't beat a good daydream, I honestly think this is why I love the peace and quiet! 😂

Can I steal your daydream?! That would be perfect. I'd add to blasting away tinnitus better eyesight, because I'm pretty sure my eyes get worse every year. I'm sure she could manage that. 😁
