Electric car - second hand?

We are coming to the end of our lease and we can either afford:

  • an brand new petrol car
  • second hand electric

Which is the better option? We can't afford brand new electric (cheapest seem to be about £8k more than petrol for new cars).

A Tesla LFP battery will likely do millions of miles. Go second hand.

We bought a second hand Tesla model 3 - lots have come off leases now so big price drop. No battery problems so far and cheap to run (mostly home charging with the odd motorway charge for long journeys) and nice to drive.

I’d never buy a brand new car. Massive waste of money and in my opinion bad for the environment with so many people getting new cars all the time.

We bought a 2yo EV. Price had dropped a lot for new and was pretty much same price as the same petrol model with same trim range within a few hundred pounds. We've saved a fortune on fuel, and my husband uses it for business use sometimes too and gets paid the full 45p a mile, which is very nice!

It's also so lovely to drive. I find driving our other petrol car a bit jarring v the smoothness and quietness of the EV.

I love my electric car and can't imagine ever going back to an ICE now. If you can get a home charger then it's a no brainer. I wouldn't go electric however if you couldn't have a charger. The most popular is an Ohme and they're a grand or so.

My full 'tank' (300-350 miles) costs £5.

We paid about £15k for our 22 reg e-C4 at top trim level.

Is it cheap?? I paid a lot less than that, but mine was 4 years old! A few grumbles about this model on reviews (small boot, particularly inefficient with charge in cold weather) but the range is good and the fact that it's registered this year with a ?five year warranty is appealing.
