Housing association to fit new flat fire door AND new locks.

We had our flat door modified in 2019 to meet regulations and it has a self closer. An inspection officer came round unannounced on 12 JULY and checked it said thankyou and left. Received a letter last Friday and these doors have to be replaced URGENTLY (July was four months ago) i rang them today and we will also have to have new locks fitted and will be given three new keys. (DH says we can sort a locksmith out later) Has anyone else had this done? Im very concerned about the security aspect of this. They are doing a lot of the estate

We changed the locks after we moved in in 1994

So, the lock you are worried about losing is 30 years old?
Surely even a cheaper modern lock is at least as secure as an aged one?

You seem to be very paranoid about doors getting changed. Maybe you should see the GP because this really isn't a normal response

Its a normal response to past experience of shoddy works and being pissed about.

People on here would soon moan if their childs teaching assistant was taking time off constantly to deal with stuff like this Imagine the AIBU from the pissed off parent

No We changed the locks after we moved in in 1994 Why should i pay bigger premium on contents insurance because someone else has a key

Because it’s not your house 🤷‍♀️

If I read this correctly, the OP is a leaseholder on the property.

Many people are leaseholders on properties - but the actual freeholder does not have a key to the property.

I am also not sure if HA's have keys to all their properties that they rent out, let alone lease out.

BoobyDazzler · 04/11/2024 20:33

HA’s don’t keep keys to all properties they own, most registered providers have thousands and thousands of properties.. can you imagine the logistics of managing that many keys? Not to mention the fact that it would be deeply unethical.

No its not but i should be just as safe and secure as a home owner. Are you saying i cant change the locks because i rent. To all intents and purposes it is my home. And its a flat not a house. And i doubt a Crime Prevention Officer would agree with you.

OP posts:
JenniferBooth · 04/11/2024 20:38

So i dont have the same right to safety as a home owner My life and safety is worth less because i rent.

@JenniferBooth

SH tenant= bad attitude
Own your own home= concerned home owner

I think you have a rather large chip on your shoulder. I'm not saying you have a bad attitude because you are a tenant, I'm saying you have a bad attitude because you have responded rudely to several posters.

Urgh. Some people are never happy. You have little to moan about regarding a new door, yet you seem to have made it into a big deal. It's a door ffs.

This.

People are only trying to help, and are getting snarky responses.

I am a leaseholder in an ex council property.
Of course I would change a lock if I wanted to.

You probably have no choice over whether to have a new fire door fitted - but you certainly have the right to change the locks.

DevilWitch · 04/11/2024 20:45

That’s the case for most renters, myself included. The housing association or landlord has access to their property, they won’t use that access unless they need to. No need to be quite so dramatic about it.

cakeorwine · 04/11/2024 20:48

Sorry - I think I misunderstood

You are a tenant, not a leaseholder.

What does your tenancy agreement state about changing locks?

I would be very surprised if your HA had keys to all the properties - normally keys are returned at the end of the tenancy and then given to the new tenant. Which of course raises concerns as the previous tenant may have a copy which they keep.

I would speak to your Housing Officer.

It would need to be done - and post Grenfell, fire risk assessments and the actions from them are important. Although a delay of 4 months from the assessment is not exactly urgent....

She was the same on previous threads about housing I have had the misfortune to interact with her on - aggressive with a stinking attitude problem. Doesn’t actually read any replies or respond apart from repeating the same thing.

Edited

Maybe thats because of the attitudes to SH tenants on here. Posters like you have helped the site to get a reputation for it.

Thanks for the condolences btw Very kind of you

I tried to help you on another thread with actual facts and I and other have tried to put your mind at rest on this thread but you’re blinkered to the facts and have such a massive chip your shoulder you refuse to acknowledge them.

If your conversations with your landlord are approached in the same way as your conversations on here are there I’m not surprised you’ve got a bad relationship with them.

Yeah im supossed to be happy about sharing a cupboard electric key with a volotile druggie neighbour and i have a bad attitude if i dont.

FACT a home owner would never be expected to share something like this with a dodgy neighbour

Unfortunately with social housing, you don't get much choice over the other tenants.

I can't see why you won't be able to get a new lock fitted. As I said, I'd be very surprised if the HA had a copy of they keys and the chances are they won't even know you've changed the locks.

mumda · 04/11/2024 21:09

JenniferBooth · 04/11/2024 18:48

Because HAs tend to do things on the cheap Those locks will be nothing like the lock i have

Speak to a local councillor who should be able to intervene.
It is criminal for them to waste money.

It’s just living in a block of flats, isn’t it? Everyone in our block has access to the same electric cupboard and we’re home owners. Not sure if anyone’s dodgy, but this isn’t an HA issue.

Also, why do you seem to be on the hook for taking time off when you mention a DH? Can’t he help at all if you’re finding it difficult?

It's got nothing to do with the councillor.

Fire doors need doing.
If a Fire Risk Assessment says that fire doors need replacing, then they need replacing.

ShamblesRock · 04/11/2024 21:13

JenniferBooth · 04/11/2024 18:51

You've found one 14 year old thread to support your idea that someone a HA may have a spare key, despite the conclusion being that the OP possibly hadn't fully locked the door.

It just doesn't happen, some HA's have thousands and thousands of properties, where on earth do you think they will keep all those keys? Lock change on a void and incoming tenant given new set of keys.
