Would you travel to Spain this week?

We are supposed to be travelling to Spain at the end of this week - flights were booked and paid for a couple of months ago and accommodation booked via booking.com and has already passed the date when it could be cancelled cost free

I have obviously been following the news regarding the flooding and really not sure if we should travel or not

We are flying to Alicante and accommodation is on Costa Blanca (near Denia)

Is anyone already in Spain and can advise on whether risk of further floods is ongoing and whether the above area is safe to travel to?

I would unless I was going to one of the affected areas and I don't think you are.

WillowTit · 04/11/2024 09:54

yes, i doubt you would get a refund

KimsInconvenience · 04/11/2024 09:59

Denial is fine and a reasonable distance south of all the damage so far. Having said that, the weather is foul and there was a red alert just north of Denia region last night (Cullera) so it won't be all that lovely a holiday I don't think!

Maddy70 · 04/11/2024 10:02

Yes. I live in Spain apart from those badly affected areas we have just has a lot of rain. Forecast is to change today. Flights have still been operating throughout. Sunny skies back later today

UltramarineViolet · 04/11/2024 10:03

@KimsInconvenience Yes, that's what I'm worried about - if weather likely to be worse than it is in UK it won't be much of a holiday but money spend on flights & accommodation will be wasted if we don't travel

I'm going on Saturday - Benidorm, so not directly affected by the flooding but bad weather on and off with some heavy rain. The planned day trip to Valencia is obviously now off the cards and will have to wait for another year.

I would lose too much money by not going so will go, even if the weather means spending a lot of time indoors!

BlackStrayCat · 04/11/2024 10:19

Denia is ok.
I live in Gandia further up a bit and it has been a bit rainy yesterday with a red alert for 6 hours. But honestly, here it was just rain and a bit of thunder.

It is still warm and the sun is out now.

Transport to and from Valencia is a no no as is Valencia itself and supermarkets have cancelled all home delivery until Friday but schools all back to normal.

This wont affect you though! Id definitely come. Alicante airport is fine. Denia is lovely and weather should improve and the lovely restaurants/beach etc will all still be there and if it is wet, it is still warm and lovely!

UltramarineViolet · 04/11/2024 10:33

Thanks @NoodleNuts and @BlackStrayCat - I think we will probably travel anyway, just need to expect a few rain showers I guess!

I'm heading there on Wednesday next week, weather looking ok!

I live in Spain, absolutely nobody should be going to Valencia, but unaffected areas are fine.

Around VLC the roads are not all open, there is not a breakdown recovery service at the moment as the gruas are all needed to remove cars, hotels/accommodation might be needed by people whose homes are inaccessible etc. The damage is awful but very localised, so no reason not to go to Denia.

UltramarineViolet · 04/11/2024 13:23

Thanks @EspanaPorfavor I do hope you have not been badly affected where you live

Thank you @UltramarineViolet - yes it is a whole other climate in my part of Spain so it feels surreal that it has happened in this country. Barcelona airport is flooding as we speak.

Cynic17 · 04/11/2024 15:48

It's not about whether it's safe, but whether the region could cope with visitors. If they are struggling, probably best to not go. If they are OK, then you absolutely must go because they will need the income that tourists bring.

Working9t05 · 04/11/2024 15:59

I am due to be in Barcelona this weekend - does anyone know how bad it is there? I guess all we can do is wait and see if the flight goes ahead otherwise we will lose our money!

EspanaPorfavor · 05/11/2024 07:28

@Working9t05 they have a red alert at the moment. Lots of cancelled flights… I’d contact your hotel and see about trying to change your booking in your shoes at this stage. X
