Cameras in back of ambulance recording me?

Hiya, I was wondering I was semi naked in the back of the ambulance and I noticed there were cameras.

are there people that are able to see this footage and are the cameras always recording? And if so how long is the footage kept for as I’m worried I’m just exposed

You could ask the ambulance service. I'd imagine the tapes would only be reviewed if there was a complaint, or if there was a critical incident that needed investigation. Nobody is interested in semi-naked patients, I promise you.

They probably keep it for safety reasons, don't worry.

You could request that footage is deleted however.

Changingplace · 04/11/2024 03:43

I imagine the footage is there for patient safety as much as staff. I think if you request the details of how it’s stored, for how long and when it’s deleted your local NHS would provide you with that information.

Kimmeridge · 04/11/2024 03:47

It'll be there as much as for your safety as anything. Noones going to be reviewing it.

If you ask for it to be deleted or for info though thar could mean it IS viewed.

To protect the staff! Paramedics are assaulted a lot!

Like someone down the road - the language he uses when he's taken away is shocking

OP, you need to contact the ambulance service and ask them what the deal is. It’s likely different for each service, so call the one who responded to your emergency.

There are several good reasons for having cameras in ambulances, but there being good reason does not change the fact that the recordings need careful handling to ensure they aren’t abused.

I’ve never heard of such a recording being leaked onto the Internet, so it’s likely that procedures are very robust. But you won’t know until you call up and ask. You should also see what your options are if the recordings haven’t been automatically deleted already.

It 100% safeguarding
It’s to protect staff who are regularly assaulted and ill people make some very serious accusations
proctects patients as well

As others have said, it is for protection of all and can be used as evidence so there is a legal aspect to it which means it is very heavily regulated.

If you think about it, there will be half naked people recorded a lot in ambulances as CPR for cardiac arrest is done with the top half exposed. Whole dignity and privacy is an important consideration, life saving measures are priority.

Your questions can be answered by googling it. There’s lots of information on this available.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 04/11/2024 05:37

I don’t think people understand how strict the gdpr rules are for nhs staff. We can’t even look at our own medical records without doing a subject access request.

Even the paramedics who treated you and already saw you half naked at the time aren’t able to access the footage without a legitimate medical or legal reason.

The cameras are there because paramedics are assaulted all the time, and because sadly patients make shit up about healthcare workers all the time.

Protect staff due to them being assaulted and having g false accusations made
Protect patients in case they report an assault
Review medical practices if you died on the way to the hospital and a lost mortum raises questions or the coroner raises questions about tje care
