Do you buy one?
I really like them and have never had one. Do they only last one season?
I've seen some pots in the supermarket that looked like they had yet to grow?

Would that be a good buy?

My shop-bought poinsettias usually last for a few years, but I've never had one that turned red again after the first season and for me, the leaves are significantly smaller. I'm not one of life's gardeners, however!

Supermarkets generally sell the solid, red colour, but they come in a variety of interesting colours- white, variegated, pale pink etc if you go to a flower market or nursery. I have kept them after Christmas, but that was in a London flat at the time. It grew leggy, but was still green and living. I think the 'flowers' are called bracts and actually a type of leaf and not a flower. I also believe they need X amount of weeks in a dark/cool place to then promote them to 'flower' the following year.

Yes, they are ok, but I personally prefer amaryllis flowers. Aldi/lidl will be selling the bulbs soon for £3.99. They also need little care and have a beautiful flower around Christmas. (I'm a beginner gardener, so I'm sure others with more experience will come along).

Amaryllis? I'll look into this.

They need to be kept in total darkness for ~14 hours a day for 8 weeks to go red.

Or garden centres etc. Buy the biggest/heaviest bulb you can. I've had mine 3yrs now and they have babies, so its not a 1 off purchase if you store them over summer.

I grow an amaryllis every year, it's tradition. I have a "competition" with DSis, DSil and a friend. They are amazing. I also buy a pointsettia but have to be careful where to put it as they are poisonous to cats. This year we're getting a Lego one

No. Can't stand the things.

I bought a poinsettia and an amaryllis 😊
