Meat labelling - am I wrong?

Hi
So just bought this for a birthday dinner but in the shop, it was in a reduced section and I double checked with a man who works there.

This is the original label on the beef.
It states it’s £11.47/kg and total price is £17.73.

So when I see it’s advertised as 1/2 price, I’m thinking oh cool - half price of that original label price. But I think hmm, that’s the original label though. That therefore seems like the orignal price was £17.73 and once you’re at the till, it would be £8.86. Then I think oh wow that seems too cheap so I ask the man.
he doesn’t know but after looking at the shelf he says ‘that £17.73 is the reduced price.

Is it me (and DH) really missing something here or are Waitrose doing stickers to confuse people? Because surely, that original label is the price they’re selling it at from the word go - that isn’t a new half price once it’s been sat at £35.46 or they would have put a new yellow sticker over the original wouldn’t they?

It probably wasn't meant to be in the reduced section.
Another customer probably originally picked it up, found a cheaper bargain in the reduced bay so just left that original choice there rather than putting it back where they got it from.

You’re correct.
should now be £8.86.
Who was ‘the man’ you asked?

It definitely was because there was a whole shelf of them.

Where did you see it advertised as half price?

I would have assumed it was in the reduced section in error. It’s well in date so can’t see any reason it would need selling off.

A Waitrose employee - in his 40’s been working there since it opened

I think given the half price sticker (which is not a reduced sticker), I'd assume that the price on the sticker was half price.

peacejoypancakes · 03/11/2024 12:25

@Needmorelego @CrispyK open the photo, it has a half price sticker on it!

You are right OP. I just opened the app and it shows top rump as estimated price £8.60 each.

Needmorelego · 03/11/2024 12:25

Probably a genuine error.
These things happen in retail as they sell thousands of products.
Annoying - but not the end of the world unless you were on your last pennies for the month.
I'd let that one go to be honest.

Aha yes. That sounds like it then.
So they’ve just decided to price them all at that lower price rather than actually reduce them with a yellow sticker because they need selling quickly.
Ok, thanks.

If you look on the website , the usual price per kilo for that cut is twenty odd , so the sticker already includes the discount.

Ok. But confusing yes?

The price per kilo is £11.67, which is very cheap for grass fed beef, so that must be the offer price. It's not reduced, it's a special offer.

Yes I know and I know we are lucky to be buying an expensive piece of beef and I would never usually spend that much on beef. But it looked such nice quality i thought I’d slow cook it.

But that is £8.60 for “typical weight 0.75kg” and the piece OP saw is twice as heavy. So will cost twice as much.

OP pretty sure the £11.46/kg IS the half price cost. Reduced price in the shop would be a yellow sticker.

Yes I agree. It isn’t yellow sticker, reduced to clear due to short date, it’s a special offer.

Verbena17 · 03/11/2024 12:30

At the end of the day, I paid it and accepted the price as he told me.
It was just slightly annoying how Waitrose seemed to have been slightly dodge with their labelling (which isn’t uncommon)

nomorehocuspocus · 03/11/2024 12:59

They aren't reduced, it is a special offer. That sort of sticker means the price per kilo is half what they would normally be charging per kilo for that product.

This is correct, although £23 per kg normal price would definitely be towards the higher end of normal price for beef rump.

a quick google suggests asda and sainsburys equivalent is around £15/kg, Morrisons £20/kg and Booths £26/kg.

Crinkle77 · 03/11/2024 13:21

As there's no yellow sticker on it I'd assume £17.73 is the reduced price.

dementedpixie · 03/11/2024 13:23

It is a special offer not a reduced to clear sticker
The price on the ticket is the reduced price. It will be the price per kg that is half the usual price
