I've been once before and loved it. Have yet to see the castle. But can someone give me some general suggestions on what to do? Perhaps related to "historical stuff".

You’ll get loads of suggestions here, Edinburgh is awesome! I admit to being biased, being from there.. Do the castle if you wish, it is worth a look if you like that sort of thing but it’s quite expensive. Holyrood Palace is also very interesting from a historical perspective - also expensive. Basically if you want history you can start at one end of the Rotal Mile and work your way to the other! Loads to see and do on the way down it. Museum of Childhood is fab, Camera Obscura (good weather day preferably), Mary Kings Close, St Giles Cathedral. Ensign Ewart is a cracking old pub at the top of the Royal Mile if you fancy atmosphere and a pint.

The Royal Mile is a great place to explore.

Chambers Street Museum is free.

Holyrood is much better than the castle. It's worth walking up to the esplanade for the views. Calton Hill aka Cardiac Hill is worth the views too.

The tour buses and the ghost tour bus too for some fun. Walking ghost tours. Mary Kings Close was a great visit.

Lots of places to eat and drink.

Visit the Royal Yacht Britannia
You can take a guided walk under The Royal Mile and see the tunnels and how people used to live
DynamicEarth is brilliant
Holyrood House
Museum of Edinburgh

If you Google Museums of Edinburgh there are loads more.

I assume the biggest green space/park is the Meadows.

The botanics too

I visited this time last year and it's the best place to be in autumn. Its beautiful.

I was visiting family in East Lothian so only had a day in the city. I went to The Georgian House (National Trust), the National Galleries and a wander around the gardens running alongside Princes Street. Venturing up towards the Royal Mile is wonderful. Lots of places to have a coffee and people watch. Lovely shops and so much history.

Enjoy your break!

I've never done fringe before. What's it like?

Tintackedsea · 03/11/2024 13:23

The fringe is in August and is very busy. You can see some great plays and comedy shows, authors etc. Loads and loads of stuff. Accommodation is vv expensive at that time of year.

I like Modern One. Some fabulous paintings.

National Museum is great.

We did a fab tour of the underground vaults. Really interesting!

JustLoretta · 03/11/2024 13:33

Not meaning to upset anyone but me my family thought Dynamic Earth was rubbish. Edinburgh is fab but it has its fair share of attractions where you can spend vast amounts of cash on average attractions. It's all down to personal taste! Definitely worth doing your homework!
