Advice about a promotion please!

I have been asked to apply for a promotion at work, it's to supervise/manage the team I work in now. It will go from shift work to set days and hours each week, will see more of my kids, career progression, pay rise, better pension at the end of it, already know how to do part of the job now.

My main concern is supervising people I have been working alongside for years, they are on the whole a nice, hardworking team but there are a couple of strong characters who are difficult to manage, I don't feel like they will want to listen to me having just been 'one of them'. My manager is supportive but not been in that role long either. If my main worry is dealing with these people should I really be going for it? Anyone with any experience having done similar would be great.

Will you get any management training?

Will you get any management training?

Yes, weekly for 12 weeks.

I had similar, and there were sticky moments, when managing a more experienced, older man, but I got through it, with the advice of my manager.
The training is reassuring. I would say you should definitely go for it. It sounds like a great opportunity and it’s often hard to make the leap into managing people. I mean if you look to move job into a role managing people, they want people management experience.

I have exactly the same here, no one on the team wants the progression though as they all work part time and don't want full time hours so from that point of view there wont be animosity that someone else didn't get it. Thank you for your advice.

Go for it! They obviously think you are capable and want you in the role.

I've done this.
Yiu hacevto remember not to be people's friend (and break any SM connections).
Step away from micromanaging them doing their job, even if you are screaming inside "I'd do it differently". You can empathise though and give help if it's asked for.
Be professional.

I've been a TL of other teams too. TBH I found it much easier to manager teams I had t worked it, but for a team you have worked in you have the authenticity of knowing what they do. Just let them do it!
