Getting to rugby at Twickenham from the SW

Going to Twickenham for the first time, travelling from the south west. I’m thinking we might drive to reading then take the train? Has anyone got any tips for me…? Bit confused! Had expected to just book a car park but it looks like that might be a nightmare!

Can you stay overnight.
Premier Inn Richmond is nice and has parking, bus straight outside takes you straight to the stadium and it's within walking distance (an hour) back as the roads and buses are packed full. There is a closer travel lodge I think but I haven't stayed in it.

That's a good idea. Traffic around match day is a nightmare. It's a good atmosphere to walk from the station. Only problem is getting back as it takes forever to get into the station. We did it once after a concert and it was really stressful tbh. You might want to stay on for a bit or leave early

If you are in the south west can you get the train to Reading? It's about 30 mins from Reading on the line to Waterloo.

If you drive it's probably best to park in Richmond and walk from there.

Don't try and drive to twickenham as most of the roads are either closed or heavily policed to allow the crowds through and traffic is very heavy.

There is parking at Reading station, it's not cheap but is convenient.

You have a good plan. Most South Western Railway trains into Waterloo from Reading ( NOT the GWR into Paddington ) stop at Twickenham station, including the fast ones, and you are guided clearly towards the walk to stadium from there. Crowds, but usually very good tempered and the appropriate entrance gates are well marked. Lots of stewards.

When’s the game OP?

Getting back through Twickenham station can be slow due to the volume of people - but it depends if you want to go home that evening or stay locally.

Agree as above you could stay locally (Richmond nice if you haven’t been and v walkable), or if you’re happy hanging around post-game the station does calm down after a bit.

There is a direct train to Reading on that line.

Thanks - got to get back again for DC own games on Sunday else staying in the region would be preferable. Got a relative in winchester which I was wondering about making use of but I think Reading probably easiest. It’s going to be a late night home though!

Eng v SA in two weeks time. Late thinking about travel as per!

@CooksDryMeasure , another option if you don't mind walking is to book a parking space using the just park app in Whitton and then walk to the stadium. There is always a really long queue to get out of the stadium and into the train station, if you walk towards whitton you are walking away from the crowds.

Sendit · 02/11/2024 21:36

There is on street parking around 6th Cross Road/Stanley Road that is free or around Strawberry Hill station. It's then about 20 minutes walk

SurelyNot22 · 02/11/2024 21:41

Lots of ppl who live in roads around the stadium rent their driveways out on sites such as just park. Usually you can get somewhere for approx £20 for a few hours and it's then an easy walk to the stadium.

CooksDryMeasure · 02/11/2024 21:42

Is the traffic not absolutely horrendous though if you try to get too close?

OP posts:
SurelyNot22 · 02/11/2024 21:49

Nope not really. You just have to book the slot to start a couple of hours before the match.

So today for example KO was 1510, and our drive was booked by two cars from 1300-1900.

Roads closed from 1330-1430. Roads reopened when the match starts to ease local traffic, and allow ppl to get around who aren't at the match. Roads then re closed from 1600-1830.

The ppl who were booked on our drive just had some fun at the stadium after the match for a couple of hours I think. There's usually live music there for fans until 1900 ish. Plus food and drink etc.

SurelyNot22 · 02/11/2024 21:51

Ps this is a really useful live feed for road closures etc

I seem to remember parking for a day in Richmond and getting a shuttle bus to Twickenham working out ok on a rugby day

gingergiraffe · 02/11/2024 23:31

Whenever my husband goes to Twickenham from Bristol, he drives to Heathrow and books a room for the night there. Easy to get a bus from there to Twickenham and back, then picks up the car to drive home again the next morning with no drink driving.

CooksDryMeasure · 03/11/2024 08:45

@SurelyNot22 are you booked for the SA game? 😆

OP posts:
chickenpieandchips · 03/11/2024 09:39

We parked in a nearby school and walked from there for a 6 nations match. Had to pre book.

CooksDryMeasure · 25/01/2025 13:37

Just updating in case anyone else searching for this sort of info! Booked a driveway about a 25 min walk away. Got there about 1pm and had lunch nearby then walked to the game. It made for a long day driving up & down, but doable.
