Why would you do if you were me?

I recently (just over a year) changed jobs after 20 plus years. I teach SEN and used to teach in a specialist school but moved to a mainstream school with an SEN room attached. No other teachers in my new school feel ‘comfortable’ working in the class. The headteacher is lovely but very much into academics and the behaviours in the class are challenging. The other team members have notes from the GP to say they cannot work in this room (they do general class support) and go home early, the head of dept is often out and rarely goes to the timetabled slots allocated. So it all falls on my shoulders.
the job is ten mins from home and environment overall is ok (like the students and some teachers are friendly). I can be home to collect my own kids early.

but going forward I feel so uneasy and it’s unfair. The head of department and headteacher are friends out of school so they get listened to more than me. I have more experience and qualifications and headteacher is nice but will accommodate everyone else (due to the fact maybe I am new and the others don’t tell the full truth eg take time off a lot, one won’t do parent teachers evening etc but they get thought of more highly than those who work hard)

should I change schools ? There is work 30 min drive away (job has come up twice) in a country school ? But nothing is perfect I know ? But I will resent how things are where I am. It’s hard being in the toughest part of the school and others waking out early playing the system and it’s like a kick in the guts everyday 😭

What years are your kids in?

Pippatpip · 02/11/2024 17:32

So the others who are supposed to be working in this unit (TAs?) have dr notes saying they cannot work in the unit. WTF! Why? It sounds like you've been brought in to be crown control.

Are these students only educated in the unit? How old are they? Are you responsible for all the paperwork and reviews as well? If so, you have well and truly been stitched up.

I would stay.

Firstly I would stop comparing myself to others going early. This your choice / level of commitment and professionalism.

You really do not know what the head is thinking, just what you assume they are thinking. Stick at it and show your value.

There are definite positives there, focus on them more.

The TAs are great. It’s the other SEN teachers who won’t come in. I’m happy enough to do the paperwork. It’s the unfairness of them only having to support one to one dyslexia whilst I have all the challenging behaviours. Also we have to go out to mainstream classes and it would work better if for part of the day, subject teachers came into the class rather than moving the students with quite high needs and expecting them to remain quiet for a whole hour in a huge mainstream class. I have said all of this to management.

The head is absolutely lovely as is the deputy. Both very kind and professional and hard working.

name I do think this too - but it’s hard to get past the feeling of injustice really. Unless I stay and go part time next year and let someone else take the whole burden of this.

Move. You are being exploited. It will eat you up. The injustice of it does reflect well on the SMT.

DeliciousApples · 02/11/2024 17:42

I don't think they are listening to you or prepared to make any changes for you.

If you stay it'll remain the same.

Is the other job going to be the sane though, people not pulling their weight etc? If not it could be worth a go. You will indeed resent other teachers who are supposed to be doing the same as you not pulling their weight.

Spagettifunctional · 02/11/2024 17:43

The other school (I once was there for a different pupose) is more cohesive, SEN is well established and all staff muck in.

I do feel I am good natured and hard working but I do feel exploited, yes.
